I found out last night that my steers LOVE marshmellows. I was wondering if you are alound to use them in the ring to help keep their head up?

I suppose you could. I don't really find it possible though. One hand you will be holding on to them and the other you should have the show stick in. If you can make it work by all means go for it, Im pretty sure there and no rules against it.

so you need to bribe then to keep their heads up?? maybe you arnt finsished after all??
I only have to bribe one. Bescasue he is really stubborn and wont keep his head up. Maybe I'm not finished what are you talking about?

I don't want to sound discouraging, but I don't think marshmellows are the way to go. For one, you need both hands. One to hold the halter the other to hold the show stick.
Secondly, the judge could easily discount you for doing so. If a placing came down real close between you and someone else the judge could place you lower just because of the marshmellows.

But I cant get him to keep his head up So I am going to get points off for that... And the marshmellow were just an Idea. I am probally no going to use them...

Do you make him stand during the day with his head up? I have found int he past years this helps a great deal. My steers stand for a minimum of 4 hours each day with their heads tied at 'show level'. If you do not know what show level is look at some champion pictures and judge from there on how high your steers head needs to be. Even if there is only a week or so left until your fair, making them stand each day with their heads up will help.

Good points - teach the steer to hold his head high. Secondly the marshmellow are made with fat and are a violation of the feedban.

I have never heard of Marshmellows being made with fat. Quite the opposite actually. Where did you see this?

I have never heard that either. I'm pretty sure that they are made out of sugar, and thats about it.

If you want to know... I was hungary and I was bored and I was eatting them out him their pen and one came up to me and I stuck it by his mouth and he ate it and wouldnt leave me alone after that. AND I have never heard that they are made with fat...

Have you ever shown him before? I have a bull that hangs his head down and I swear it weighs 50 lbs, it is very hard to hold it up. But when we go in the show ring or even in the show barn his head automatically goes up because of all the different sights and sounds. I would also try scratching him around the brisket if he likes it he just might raise his head higher. It is kinda a trial and error thing. But a steer that eats marshmallows, sounds 100% cute to me. But I can see how it would be difficult to have a handfull of marshmallows, a showstick, and your lead. I actually heard that Marshmallows are made from pork by products also some cattle leftovers. It isn't the Marshmallow it's self but the gelatin in them. It makes me never want to eat them again.

GOOD LUCK!

I guess the only sure way to find out what marshmellows are made out of is to call the company that made the marshmellows to begin with. (Number should be on the bag)

As for using them in the show ring- No. In my opinion you will just be the laughing stock for everyone (including the judge). And although it shouldn't be included in the way you place, there's a good chance it will.

One trick could be to use the middle of your show stick and tap their head up. Also tying their heads up should also be done. Just work with them- you're never finished- not until you walk out of the show ring.
