I recently bought my first cow, she is a murraygrey/angus cross,50/50. she has a heifer calf at her side,from a MG. bull & she is breed back to a MG. bull . I was told that the heifer calf is considered a full blood, but if the next calf is a bull it would not be considered a full blood . Why is this ? thank you for your info. Mark

Mark: welcome to the beef cow calf business. I will try to explain a little about how the upgrading system works with Murray Greys in North America. You didn't state whether your cross cow was sired by a Murray grey or not but I will assume so, as it appears that you have purchased from someone that is using Murray Grey bulls. So if your cow is registered it will be recorded in the Herd Book as a 50% and your pedigree will have the lineage of the cows sire indicated. The heifer calf offsping of this registered 50% cow and the registered purebred Murray Grey bull is eligible to be registered and recorded in the Herd Book at 75% (3/4 Murray Grey). This 3/4 heifer when bred to a registered purebred Murray Grey bull will have a 7/8 calf. If the 7/8 calf is a heifer then it can be registered and entered in the Herd Book as a Purebred, if the calf is a bull then it can be registered and is recorded in the Herd Book as a 87.5% (7/8). Only Purebred Murray Grey bulls can be used to upgrade to Purebred status. In an upgrading program bulls are considered Purebred at 15/16 (93.75%). I hope this has helped in clarifying upgrading that is permitted within Murray Greys in North America. Hi dunmovin, Thanks for asking. I was declared "Cancer Free" on May 26, 2002. Talk about a weight lifting. LOL. I am gaining back my strength from the surgery and radiation and had to get a haircut the other day. (Hair has grown back after the chemo.) LOL. Hope you and your family are doing well and also the "pretty-colored" Angus.
