Massey Ferguson 283 Hydraulic Problem

Ok, Need some help. I have a question as to what might be the problem. My tractor when trying to lift a heavy load when using the lift arms will do the following. If it is really heavy will only lift it about 8" and will not lift it any higher, unless you pull the draft all the way to the up position, once it is all the way up it will make a knocking sound as if it is pumping against itself, You can adjust the draft until it quits knocking and it will hold it for just a little while then it will slowly drop the load. I have changed the oil/filter/"O" rings. My suspicion is it is a release valve but wanted to give you guys a whirl as to what you think! Thanks for the responses!

Sounds like a relief valve dropping the pressure

How heavy is heavy? Tractor makes generally publish what a given model is equipped to lift. When hydraulic systems gets overloaded relief valves open.

It won't carry a 5X6 round bale. And it is my understanding is that it should.
