Keeping Records

When keeping records for a cow calf operation, what things need to be written down? Also, are there any computer programs that help you keeping records for this type of agriculture business? If anyone would have any information I would be more than happy to hear from you.

There are a number of programs that will help you with the record keeping. It kind of depends on how many head you are trying to keep records on. Even though for the majority of my working career I was in the coimputer industry, sometimes a simple pencil and paper approach is the best. I know that's heresy, but it's true. We keep very simple records, cow id, age/birth date if known, breeding, calving, weaning, acquisition and disposale. Health and vaccination worming data. Thats probably the bare bones of what is needed, but it's all we keep anymore. We found that simple records that are easy to keep beat the hell out of sophisticated records that aren't kept.
