IRRIGATING HAY FIELD??

Help Support CattleToday:

The only hay we irrigated was in the desert. Each field was 160 acres and most were irrigated by center pivots. The ones without a pivot were irrigated with hand/wheel lines. Twice a day we had to move the lines 1 sprinkler spray width. Those sucked

Yes, we irrigate hay fields. We use a combination of center pivots, gated pipe/river water pumped out of a concrete ditch, and tubes. The tubes are only used to water the northwest corner of the east pivot. Center pivots are pretty self-explanatory. Our river water is delivered via a head gate out of the main ditch that is fed by the river. At the end of the ditch is a pit and a pump that pumps the water out and sends it to one of two fields. The east pivot pump can also be used to water both those fields prior to the river water coming in. The west pivot pump is used to water the west pivot, as well as a field south of the west pivot using gated pipe. Then there is another pump out by the road that can be used to fill the ditch and tube water out to water the corner of the east pivot, waters the north part of the west pivot that the pivot doesn't reach, the field east of Mom and Dad's house, the field north of the horse barn, and supplies the north pivot.

It sounds like you are only contemplating it on a small scale with the tripods. I have found what we call firefighter pumps are very suitable for that sort of application. They are usually powered by a 6.5hp Honda and have one 1.5'' and two 1" outlets and provide very good pressure for those type of sprinklers. They are not very expensive either.

In central cal they used to use what they called water cannons. Basicly it was a huge rainbird type sprinkler that shot water a couple of hundred feet. They used old ford pinto V6 engines as the pump. 4 cylinders ran the engine and 2 cylinders modified to be a pump. Pretty ingenious
