Hi all,

We are weaning our first calves ever. (Lowlines) We put the mothers in a large separation pen and left the calves with two other cows and a calf in their familiar pasture. There's just a fence between them. The weaning calves are seven months old and are doing fine. Their mothers are going bug-nuts. We live in a neighborhood of ten acre lots with folks living right across the street. They haven't complained yet but, it's been one night.

How long will those cows vocalize? It's not a calf call, it's the persistent distress call. Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, on and on.

Also, I find lots of information about calves but none on their mothers during weaning. Is there anything to do with their udders? Will they just dry up in a few days on their own?

Thanks

The cows will beller periodically for a day or 2, then they shut up and go about their business. Nothing to do with the udders. They'll dry up on their own.

We all know it, a couple days will fix them.. they start to give up when they go hoarse.

Tell your neighbors this is what rural life consists of. It's not like the bellering goes on all year.

Ours usually go on for about three days for the cows, I don't know if you feed grain to your cows but don't while weaning they don't need to make more milk roughage is all they need until they start drying up.

Three nights have passed and they are pretty quiet now. The first night was absurd, the second merely bothersome and the third okay. No complaints ever came in but the folks across the road will be receiving a peace offering anyway.

Thanks for the input!
