How long for labor

I have a cow that has had the feet of the baby sticking out of her lady parts for the last couple of days and was wondering how long before she will actually have the calf

We have had cows for the last 6 yrs and this is the first time I have ever noticed anything like this

Yes one hour from signs of calving to when help is needed.

If the calf is too big you will need 'wire' to saw the calf into pieces to get it out.

Infection will set in with the rotting dead calf, so you will need a vet for antibiotics or you will lose the cow as well.

I know by now you feel awful but none of us start out knowing it all. If your cow makes it through this she will probably have difficulty rebreeding so pay special attention to whether she gets bred back or not go ahead and have a vet pregnacy check her so that you don't have a year into her and find out she won't breed. If she was mine and you were able to save the cow I would go ahead and cull her anyway the majority of the time the odds are she will have difficulty calving if she gets bred back.
Don't feel bad none of us were born knowing how to take care of cattle and if your vet is like ours he has to charge well to cover his expenses especially on a weekend or holiday.

Is there something that I can do to help this situation ?
One of my sisters is pretty handy at childbirthing and I could possibly get her to help me to assist this cow

Reach in and see if you can find all of the appropriate parts. Front feet with the head laying on top tof them. If you can you can try to pull the calf. But even better to prevent the cow from suffering and someone from getting hurt, just shoot the cow and bury her.

I have a stanchion were we milk the cows, should I put her in this so she doesn't try to get away? or would I be better off trying to get her laid down to do this
I know birthing is pretty painful and on humans and figured it would be on a cow also so would this be something to do or not

Itwould be better to put a halter on her (a strong one) and tie her so that she can;t move around much but that you can release the halter rope from what it's tied to quickly and with a strain on it if/when she goes down. It's easier to pull them if they are standing but pain and pressure does at times cause them to go down. Search internet for the subject assisting a cow at calving or things like that and you should find a lot of informaiton on what to look for and maybe how to correct a bad delivery. Make sure to wear shoulder length plastic gloves and have some serious antibiotics on hand. If you give antibiotics the cow will not be able to be eaten for any where from a week to a month. Depends on the with holding time for slaughter.

I would try the stanchion and hopefully it is good and stout
if you have a good 1/2 diameter rope to make a noose in wrap it around each leg and the but a half hitch in it over the legs so it doesn't slip off as easily
try to pull the calf down towards the cows feet when the cow strains
good luck and as others said the smell will not be the greatest in the world
you really will need some type of antibiotics for the cow afterwards
also this cow could turn mean because of the infection
I have seen them get pretty nasty and try to kill everything and anyone that gets near them

Are you in a cult? Where has your father been while this cow was walking around like this for several days. It seems strange to me that he has had cows for 6 years and doesn't know that he has a problem with this one after a few hours of her looking like that.

How about telling us where you are located.

Can you get the cow loaded?? Can she make the ride?? Our vet allows us on his property. Sounds like your cow needs some serious help from someone with experiance. :2cents:

Its none of my business as to why or how come a vet is not allowed. Strange, yes to a lot of us, but if we were all the same the world would be a boring place.

With that said, If you have always had good luck and not many head, and no previous experience with livestock, you might not of ever ran into a problem before....I wouldn't get too upset about it. We all have done stupid stuff. You just had guts enough to admit it. Plus you at least asked instead of draggin your feet. I comend you for doing that much.

You might mention to your father that if you could of gotten assistance either to your place or taken it somewhere you could of had a C-section done and saved both cow and calf. It might of just had the head to the side. Could of reached in there and put it between the feet and that might of taken care of it. Was it front feet or back that were showing? Either way culling would proably be best since prices are what they are. If you had caught it early, she proably of bred back. Who knows about why she did what she did. In your case shooting might be best...IDK. You know what your circumstances.

Father doesn't take care of the cows and I doubt that he ever sees them so it is not his fault!
I took this job of tending the cattle over just a few weeks ago and I am 19 and have never had any experience with cattle other than I used to go look at them when I was younger.

The family has 36 cows and 1 bull
4 of these cows are for the family milk and the rest are for providing beef for the family
I talked to one of the brothers that is in charge of the butchering and processing of our beef and he agreed with what Mr Dun said and he shot the cow and butchered her

I wasn't being SNIDE I was being serious. And whether or not FATHER sees the cow a lot or not he is ultimately responsible and anyone who would let a cow walk around like that should be charged with animal cruelty. As far as the rights of the individual to exclude people from their property if we substitute the words sick child for cow here is the individual still empowered to exclude OUTSIDERS. I think not!........I could be dead wrong but I am pretty sure FATHER means a lot more than Daddy in this family.

I am pretty sure Dun meant shoot her to end her misery.Your brother just killed and fed a cow to his family that was most likely full of infection from a putrified calf inside of her.
