How far do you let someone ride you before you say enough is enough and you need to be paid?

This is really a pet peeve with me. If someone does work for me or I buy something from them I am going to pay them as promptly as possible if not the same day. I just don't understand why this is not the common rule.

I either expect it up front or expect it not to get paid. Sometimes with the second one I'm pleasantly mistaken.

People aren't like they used to be.

Pretty few businesses allow billing these days because people aren't trust worthy.

People would rather buy a want, than pay a debt they owe. They buy hummers and live in houses triple the price they should and then set up go fund me pages when a life event happens and they don't have a dime in savings.

I might be too far the other way. I won't pull much of anything out of savings once it goes in there. I'll pretty much just do without till I can scratch the new funds together. Once i get used to what I have, it bothers me to see less.

Whatever the agreement was between the two parties is when they should pay, if not before. I'm not good with folks owing me money and not paying, isn't that like stealing? Maybe if you let them borrow a tractor they'll pay you.

Nah, Sky pays promptly but the problem with dealing with Sky is he's ordering another 3 tons of cheese before the check even clears the bank.

My dilemma really didn't concern me but a contractor I hired to do some work on one of the farms I manage. I've worked for this family for over 25 years and never had a problem but now the reigns have been handed to the next generation and they can't find time in their busy lives of luxury to pay the bills in a timely manner and this puts undue pressure on me.

After a month riding this contractor I had had enough and had a come to Jesus meeting with the son half expecting to be fired from this headache when I finished my tirade. This boy seems to think I owe him respect because of who his daddy was. NOT. He's just the son of a good man who needs to earn my respect and he's got a long way to go before he can even begin to fill his father's shoes - or his mother's for that matter. I'm not fired - yet. But the important thing is the contractor is paid. I couldn't give a dam one way or the other to be honest. I said my peace and it was the truth and if he can't do better in the future I told him he needs to find someone else to wipe up his milk because I'm not doing it anymore.

It'll probably be Unemployed Dumbazz by the end of next week when the shock wears off this boy but I honestly don't care. Its just not right. Its like Kenny mentioned, poor people or people who have earned their money will pay you quick because they understand. These kids who've done nothing more than dodge a coat hanger are something else with their sense of entitlement. I just don't have the patience anymore and its been one shyt week so it was the perfect storm I guess.

Should have a promissory note, payment schedule, and security agreement, never no interest. If not paying send notice of default and then repo or if not able to do without guy going postal on ya and try to shoot ya either hire someone to do it or file replevin action where sheriff ultimately then has to do it. At least that's how we do it in Nebraska!

I don't have everyone pay me up front because that wouldn't be professional in my line of work for certain types of work but if you've ever stiffed me you will pay what you owe plus upfront for any more. I bill promptly at first of each month, rebill, then send more than 6 month delinquent to collections, also get plenty large enough retainers for any litigation cases cuz when u call me freaking out all the time or other side or opposing attorney is causing drama or there is a lot of discovery, that retainer gets eaten through dang fast! I pride myself on running a tight ship but you gotta as a business. And people that are unrealistic about prices anymore don't even bother me as you look at what everything else costs, and gotta at least meet your ever increasing overhead.
