hip cap

Help Support CattleToday:

Is that the oil filler cap you sometimes see located on top of the hip bones of cattle to keep the joints well lubed? And if so, what brand and weight oil is recommended used in colder weather? I like Amsoil, but a bit expensive for those grade cattle. :p  And how often does one change the oil in these things? As I have never found a clean out plug yet.Last but not least, what to do if one starts to leak?

I always knew a hip cap as the top part of the cow's hip has been knocked off and she now appears lop sided. Dairy cattle is all I have ever seen with a capped hip. Happens during calving or when they fall just right. We had one do it cutting the corner under the gutter cleaner. Caught her hip and the next time I looked she was crooked! Never appears to hinder movement or production just doesn't look "show ring ready" anymore.
