I just sold a 7 year old cow with cancer eye. First one in several years. I looked on the internet and articles state it is a condition that is more often seen in Herefords as we know. The articles also state that eye pigment seems to reduce the occurrence. My question is the pigment is that red hair around the eye or in the eye itself? thanks

In the eye itself but it is usually associated with dark hair around they eyes. Not always but usually.

You can also look at the nose of some animals. Pink noses usually means light pigment.

The amount of pigment in the eye is directly and proportionately correlated to the amount of pigment around the eye.

We specifically try to breed for a little eye pigment, eye cancer is one disease that effects Herefords the most, and if I can have an opportunity to reduce the chance of it in my herd, I will.
