Help! Calf won't lead!

Help Support CattleToday:

Remeber, when working with a green or stubborn animal it is key to stay calm and not get angry or frustrated, any progress is good. We have had several calves that seemed that they would never get it, we just kept working with them each day, it may take 5 minutes to get them the 40 to the wash rack, 2 minutes to get them to go the 20 feet to the watering tub when you start. But tell your son to just stick to the daily routine, keep a positive attitude and in a few days you will see improvement. Just avoid getting into a tug-o-war with the animal it just does not help, both the animal and the child get worked up.

We have used the carrot and the stick method with some calves, we feed 3-way-hay, and there always seems to be some volunteer wheat oats or barley growing, grab a hand full of the sweet green hay and they would walk were ever we wanted trying to get to it. After a few days they start leading, we still give them a hand full when they get to the final destination, as a reward.
