Hello there, great board!

My name is Sarah, I live in County Galway in Ireland and I've got a few questions re getting a calf ready to be halter trained. She is a bottle calf, purebred and reg'd Shorthorn. Due to the bottle feeding, she is very tame. She is only a week old now and I have googled high and low and cannot find any training tips on how and when to halter train her. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you.

Welcome! Hope you stick around and post some pictures.

You might want to post your question again on the Show Board, that's where the most halter training experience probably would be found.

Thank you for the welcome! Although I am not a farmer I have a few chicken, ducks, cats, horses and plenty of dogs (I run Ireland's only Bull Breed Rescue, mostly APBT, Staffies etc). Fritzie the calf came to me via a farmer, her mother died 3 days after birth. Thankfully she got colostrum before she came here into rescue, she is now on milk replacement 4x a day and is thriving and here she is:

She's in great form :D .

I have always heard that Shorthorns were a dual purpose breed but I had no idea that there were also racing shorties.

Welcome to Cattle Today, it's always nice to have a fresh perspective around here.

VERY cute pictures!! You must be doing a darn good job with her as she is so full of PEP!!

Welcome to the board from northwest Minnesota! :tiphat:

Cute heifer! Good advice to check with the show board. Some things though - rub/scratch on her at feeding if
you can to get her used to contact. If you have a pen to limit how far she can run it will help you. And if she
does "cute" things like rub her head on you when being scratched, don't allow it. It's cute now, but when she's
1000 lbs and tame it won't be! Since she's so young and already somewhat tame, she ought to halter break pretty easy.
Good luck! And welcome! :welcome:
