Between rattlesnakes, hogs and feral dumped dogs you better have something.

Who the he!! dumps feral dogs?
What do you called dumped dogs that kill poultry and livestock living off the land? Pets?

Morons..that's who.
Most here, aren't feral until they're dumped...they're someone's unwanted yard/house dog that they got tired of barking, didn't want to pay $ for feed, or a bunch of unplanned puppies they didn't want to raise and find homes for..or put down themselves so they stick 'em in a car, drive over to some desolate road or to some rural farm gate and kick them out to find their way to someone else's house..or a pasture of livestock to chase.....and that's about all I have to add to this conversation.

Ah so they were once pets and later became feral?
Yep..and some breed in the wild as ferals, increasing the feral pack, but most started off as someone's domestic companion.

Believe it or not, it's worse in some cities than in the countryside.

I have a S&W 44 special by my bed, I have a Colt Python .357 in the kitchen cabinet above the stove, and a Colt 911 Combat ACP .45 in a piece of furniture by my favorite chair in my living room.

I don't feel the need to tote any of them outside my home but apparently I'm scared stiff at the house.

I am actually more worried about the house than in town.
Scares me to drive up and they are burglarizing me again, help is at least 30 minutes away. If I am robbed while I gone I have great insurance.

The dog dumping is a real problem here in the countryside. I have often wondered which is worse for these people to do: drive to the country and drop off your dogs or cats, or take them out and euthanize them?(The shelters around here are overflowing btw).

As far as the original question. I have a CC permit. Used to keep a .40 cal Beretta in the truck. Took it out a year ago. Now I only take a small 9mm Sig with me when I got to Indy(which is as rarely as humanly possible). One of daughters goes to a comm college in Gary. I insisted she get a CC permit and spent a good deal of time ensuring she was comfortable, competent and proficient handling the gun before moving up north.

I am pro gun, pro carry, have worked with armed federal officials in an enforcement environment, and have engaged persons using or threatening to use lethal force against federal enforcement actions.

I have had CC permits from Montana, the City and County of Denver, and Kentucky. I probably have not carried concealed for more than 100 hours total in my entire lifetime.

Candidly, I am by nature not paranoid or insecure. Being very open, this is just my gut feeling - I think many who carry are playing out their childhood aspirations of being John Wayne. I acknowledge that there are legitimate circumstances to be prepared and armed. I have been there, done that. However, how many people are conducting their daily lives in an environment that warrants being armed? Think about this, Do you wear a crash helmet while driving? I know that sounds crass but the likelihood of it saving your life in a wreck far outweighs the protection benefit of the gun you carry.

I find CC a PITA. I realize that you get accustom to it. The question is - Is the juice worth the squeeze?

PS: I acknowledge most users here feel like their life is in constant danger and I am sympathetic, but I simply don't feel that threat.

I agree to some extent on the John Wayne complex. You can tell them quite easily. They can't shut up about what they carry and how they carry.
Kinda showing your cards in my opinion.
I might talk about my hunting iron.
But nobody but my wife knows about my defense arsenal.

I figured you were just using me for bait when you told me where the 380 was hid when we went to the big city.

You had already proven your stone cold abilities in the most uncomfortable ambush I could think of.

Yes, a domesticated dog living with humans is a pet. It may evolve into a stray at some point after being abandoned but it would take quite some time to become "feral" by the textbook definition of the word.

I play John Wayne and Matt Dillon in the front yard on a regular basis. A single action revolver is my favorite gun to shoot and practice with. I'd never carry a self-defense pistol where someone could see it, that kind of defies all logic. Whenever I have clothes on I have a gun in my pocket. When I go to town I always have at least two pistols on me somewhere. Raven you can joke and kid around all you want about me being scared. But not long ago a drunk at the Mexican restaurant put his hands on my daughter, I had a 9 mm in the small of my back and 380 in my pocket, but a right to the temple curred that threat instantly. I pray that I'll never need a gun for self-defense, but I feel like a fool without one in my pocket.

That's my small carry pistol sitting on top of my phone, 8 rounds of rapid fire to the head is very doable at 15'. I've run 500+ rounds through that pea shooter and haven't had the first malfunction.

If I was too scared to go into public without a gun I would move....serious business...I think I would relocate. Probably get robbed today now.

I second playing John Wayne though, who didn't want to be John Wayne growing up.

Maybe scared is the wrong word. Is there a post edit feature on here?

Grit better make sure that wallet holster is legal if you have to use it.
Last I checked that falls under AOW all other weapons and is illegal unless a tax is payed to the ATF.

They don't make the news, but it happens all the time. Most aren't out for mass shootings, though the guy that went shooting into the church a while back was stopped by a guy that shot him.

Obviously, you hit the feeble old drunk because you believed it was justified.

Nope, he grabbed my daughter by the arm. You or anyone else would receive the same treatment, or worse. I was the old and feeble one, he was just drinking at the bar, and I assumed he was drunk. Being the nice guy that I am, I didn't even have my daughter press charges.

You perceived it as a "threat". If I were the father of a daughter and a stranger grasp her arm, I might take it as a threat. I would have to be in your shoes and see what you saw. I would evaluate his intent as best I could before I would strike or shoot someone. Let's remember, you are the same guy that was prepared to shoot a security guard because she was simply standing on the corner watching cars drive by. Your motive, as I remember, was you felt "uncomfortable".

Because it never happens.

Yep. I will not say "never" but I sure think your chances of being A John Wayne Hero are about as good as getting hit by a meteor.

I have a female heeler jack russell cross I think Someone dumped her and she was already spayed. Best companion I have had.
Does her best to keep the cows off of me when feeding. She rides shotgun. She will not ride in the back of the truck. She found me in 2014

Your ignorance is showing. It never happens because good guy with guns stop it. Plenty of evidence of that .
