Hello, I am new to the board but would appreciate help with a question. We just brought a 4-H heifer home and put her in a pen with a cow/calf pair. We wanted to AI the heifer and the cow. The grown heifer has started nursing on the cow. Is there anything we can do to stop this? Has anyone had this issue before? Is this generally a short term problem or will this heifer be a problem in the pasture? Thanks!

You can try one of those easy wean noserings, but in my experience they are only effective when weaning calves, troublemakers like this will find a way around them. I'm sure its not what you want to hear, but she needs to grow wheels.

Thanks to both of you - I appreciate the replies and information. May need to ship her.

Yup. She has an itch that forever need scratchin'. If she sucks on dry cows she could give them mastitis as well. Too bad.
