Grazing Steers

My wife and I recently sold our beef herd that we have been grazing for almost 6 years. We have almost 70 acres under pasture and have an additional 100 acres in corn/soybean rotation. We are always seeding in new pasture. We really would like to raise holstein steers or possibly beef steers using management intensive grazing. Does anybody here graze steers? If we go with holstein steers we would like to buy them as calves and raise them up to finishing. Is this possibly? Do steers that are grazed, do they need a few pounds of grain per day per head? Also anyother information would be helpful. thanks and have a good day

If you would give me an e-mail, there is a magazine that might be helpful in the endeavor!

I would not wish to name the mag here in respect to our host!

I don't know if I would use Holstein steers. Holsteins in general are not the best grazers. I think I would stick with a beef breed or cross between the 2. Get just weaned beef calves or go through a sale. Good Luck

Good Luck i would diffiately use a beef steer too.. they do do better grazing than the holstiens. i do raise holstein steers but i do have them in a feedlot on top of a good supply of pasture for them. so they do well and i think it has to do alot with the feed on top of the grass they get. let me know what you end up doing thanks.
