I just got me a 18foot trailer with a gooseneck. I was wondering what the difference is in the thread part of the ball. Some have 1inch thread and others have smaller thread. Is it a weigth differance. :?:

Generally the larger the shank, the larger the capacity of the ball. I always use the largest, heaviest one I can find. Doesn't cost much for that insurance. Not worth the risk of going cheap. Choose a ball that well exceeds the max load you will put on it.

Usually the 1 inch shaft is rated at 5K and the 3/4 inch is rated for 2K. This is the usual ratings you will see. There are 1 inch shank balls that are rated 10-20-30K. I would highly recommend something in the 20-30K range for dragging a load of cattle around. I personally run a 30K.
