full blood & pure bred

Help Support CattleToday:

This is always kind of confusing o which is which. Purebred is bred up from another another breed and must have a certain percentage of the final breed to be considered purebred. But, the composition will never be 100%, maybe 99.9% but never will be 100%. Fullblood are not bred up from anything else and are 100%. Always seemed to me that the terminoly should be just the opposite.

Dun is right BUT, a fullblood is an animal that its parentage originates from imported cattle. SOMETIMES, the imported cattle (live or semen) actually was an upgraded crossbred animal in the other country. We have had instances where "fullblood" cows had less Simmental blood in them than Purebred cows. Need to do a complete pedigree check. Of course, I believe we have done a better job of "creating" a breed that fits our industry, thus I like Purebreds over Fullbloods. Jeanne
