So many variables. Unless you have a lot of pasture going to waste over the winter, I would recommend you get the book "A guide to raising beef cattle" by Heather Smith Thomas. There are so many aspects of the business, cow calf, stockers, feeders, rasising replacements, etc. The breed depends on what sells the best in your area, check the salebarns. But don't get into a breed/crossbreed that you don't like just because it's more profitable. Tiy county agent can best advise you on how many head you can support, that again depends on what part of the business you want to be involved in. You should have a USDA NRCS office in your area with a grass/pasture management person. You pay your taxes, you might as well get what you can from them.
