first calf heifer ?

Had a first calf heifer calve yesterday afternoon. Mom went to cleaning calf and is very protective of her however when calf try's to nurse mom knocks her down or will kick at her. this went on for about 30 mins last night before calf was able to nurse. This morning mom is doing the samething. we have never had this before so any opinions would be great thanks Curtis

Sounds like the calf is nursing which is the important thing, as long as the calf can nurse mom should come around. When her bag is full mom starts to scream for relief, give it a day or two.

If she continues and yOu don't think the calf is getting enough to drink /eat . Put the cow in the squeeze shoot and help the calf nurse . After a couple days the cow will decide it feels better when she is nursed and allow the calf to continue .

"IF" the calf is truly getting to nurse - I would just let them work it out. Her udder hurts, the more the calf sucks, the less it will hurt.
