Federal ID Program

Most common sense post I have read, sounds workable. Your right about the cost to the small operator, the average ranch is running 35 to 50 head in my area most would be forced out.[/quote]

And herein I think lies the crux of the biscuit. Alot of hog farmers were forced out some years back, the business being dominated by a few huge corporate operations now. A man used to be able to make a living with 50 or 60 brood sows. Now you would not even be able to feed yourself with that many. The same may be comming with cattle, I fear.

We have way too much government intervention in our lives already. The government is regulating us out of business as we sit here. Do you think that all these manufacturing jobs are going to China because of the wage difference? I'm afraid not. They are going because of all the regulation in this country. Some regulation is necessary, but it has got to the point that everybody has to justify their existence at these gov. offices and must come up with additional regulations to expand their empires. We need to be doing away with about two thirds of our government as it stands now.

First of all everyone knows or should know that any program the Government puts in place never stays the way it was designed to be... They keep adding more rules and regulations and it larger and larger..Take Social Security as a example... So what do we have here a bunch of government programs that are wrapped in sheeps clothing however there's a wolf inside..So whole will the F.I.D. program hurt it will hurt the small producer that supplements there income...It will eventually drive out the small man. Not right away of course but over time...However it will help the big time producer after all all government programs help the bigf guy and hurt the small man... In a earlier post someone said if it's to costly the small man will plant pines.. However here in Georgia the major timber companys is selling off there land and moving timber production to South America.. So what's the use in planting pines they'll be noone here to harvest or saw em up.... Johnson and johnson is closing up there manufacturing plant here and moving it to Brazil in 2005... How many other companys have moved operation out and then shipping it back for us to buy..Such as Government rugulations on the automobile industry has wiped out the indepentent garages because they can't work on em you have to take them bakc to the dealers..Are these regulations that have helped the country??? Every one of these characters running for office has stated they will make government smaller however when they get in for some reason it gets bigger..So this program will eventually put the small family business out..
What we need in this country is less Government...

Well really if you don't know your history well enough to know what happens to the small business man when the Government gets involved I beleive I am wasting my time time trying to tell you...

Hmmm. Should I take that to mean that you don't know how its going to put you out of business, just that its going to?

A lot of people felt the same way about the bangs issue, My grandad is a small producer and he said that if he lived through that then he can live through the ID. No one wants the small producers out. Most of the cattle that are in the feed lots now are from the south, again mostly small producers. I agree and don't want the government in my operation either, but we can let them know how we fill about it or just sit around sucking eggs. It is going to come, the government has said so. We can get on the train or get left behind. If we express our opinion now we can do something, Later on it will be to late. I feel like it is kind of like voting if you don't vote, then you have no right to gripe. We can sit around and talk about the packer, feedlot or whatever, but if we (as a whole) don't do something now it will be to late. Its kind of like trying to stop a 2000lb bull from running over you, last I checked he is going to win, so why try to stop him, but if you can direct him with feed or a hot shot, wouldn't you rather do that?

Texan the laast thing I will to do is argue with you...After I have never met you but if someday we should meet I would rather shake your hand as a friend...Just what I am going on is what has happened to the small business man in the last 30 years due to regulations.. Maybe I'm wrong about this program after all I have been wrong more then right in my life..ANd I hope I;m wrong because it is coming and there's nothing any of us can do...So I agree it is best to get on the wagon and get the details worked out. I have a few cows but it's not how I make my living just us them to supplement my income and help pay for expenses..I do however make my living on the retail said of the cattle industry as you know..I am concerned about the small cattleman.. as well as the general public that will be paying higher prices for there beef..As record keeping become more and more involved this wioll be passed down to the consumer...Over the 10 yrs I have seen a decline in beef sales on the retail level at the store where I work...Like I said said I may be wrong I hope so Because it is coming.

Creston, Ia., sale Dec. 15 offers preconditioned calves with ID tags

Saying that “the coming reality is national animal identification,” Tom Frey of the Creston, Ia., Livestock Auction will offer electronically-ear-tagged calves at a special sale on Dec. 15. The southwest Iowa market is working with area vets to take, according to an article in the current Iowa Cattlemen magazine, “a proactive approach to track back and animal identification.”

“Producers will need to source-verify their cattle,” Frey said, “and providing other information such as birth weights or genetics may give them an advantage when they sell their calves.”

Every calf sold on the 15th will not only be vaccinated and preconditioned, but will wear an ear tag that identifies the source and age of the animal. “It’s a way to help cow-calf producers capture added value for their calves,” said Scott Shuey, one of the vets working with Frey.

Calves wearing the electronic tags should be more in demand by buyers, Frey added. “The feedyards are interested in more information on the calves they purchase. With the Japanese market reopening, feedyards and processors will need to verify that the calves are less than 20 months of age. Producers may have a good chance for their calves to hit that market.”

The market is using the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association electronic tag program."

Here in OK the state cattlemen's assoc has a Beef Quality program. They require calves to be weaned, vaccinated and have an ear tag to be sold in their sales. The calves bring more than calves sold in the regular sale barn sale. Jordan Livestock has been doing this for a long time. There are lots of people willing to put a little extra work into their calves to get more money; or just because they think it's the right thing to do.

I don't see why it will put small producers out of business. They can identify their cattle just as well as larger producers. IMO, the programs that co-mingle calves from several breeders by weight or genetics or whatever are a good opportunity for small producers to take advantage of the benefits of selling larger groups of cattle than some of us have.
