Drought Strategies

I'm hurting bad here in North Mississippi.
Last drop of rain I saw (and it wasn't much)
was first week of July. My forcast for this
week is over 100 degrees daily and of course
NO RAIN IN THE FORECAST. Help !

Last year (06) was our 2nd drought year. I culled, bought hay and leased pasture. IMO, leasing pasture is way cheaper if you can find it, even if you have to do a little fence mending or loacte them 50 miles away. I've heard of folks (but don't know any) that have reloacted their cow heard hundreds of miles away.

While it is dated, about five years ago I loaded 7-8 trucks and drove our main herd 18 hours to their new temporary home.

Right out ofthe province and across another to find good grass. Never saw them again - hired a fellow to run them on shares for a couple of years. He did a good job - and eventually I sold the entire lot.

Anyone in the middle of a drought is in tough times - we made it through and hope you folks do as well.
