Dollar store

At the super center Walmart in Coos Bay Oregon they have locked up every category of item that people might steal. Did you know that people might steal KY jelly? So now you have to go search the isles for an employee to unlock the case. There are frequently cop cars parked out front. The Walmart 'greeters' are not nice little old ladies anymore, it's a big grumpy burley guy. In the store is the usual sight of massive obesity riding motorized carts getting more food, people with their therapy dogs they can not live one minute without that raise their legs and urinate, folks covered with tattoos, people with rainbow dyed hair and people bending over with plumbers cracks. The prices are low so it's worth the drive when stocking up and always entertaining. Ever seen the website The People of Walmart?

Our closest Dollar General is close to 2 housing projects and in walking distance of the largest one. That probably figured into their pick of that location.
We went to Walmart and Krogers tonight.
We’ve noticed that about ever time we go to Walmart we smell what we believe to be people smoking pot in the parking lot.
A lot of times our grocery runs look like we’ve came onto the set of a low budget zombie movie.
Tonight there was the usual sight of people wearing pajamas, but seemed like more than usual.
Sometimes there’s people that apparently haven’t bathed in a while and the stench will turn your stomach. Tonight a somebody fitting that description crossed in front of us and we turned down another aisle rather abruptly.
When we were walking out the store we both caught a whiff of what we think was residual pot smoke. As we got close to the truck noticed a real skinny woman staggering up through one of the curbed off sections with gravel at the start of a parking row.
I guess if one is going to high, might was well do it in the Walmart parking lot. From what I understand after getting high you get the munchies.

We don't seem to have the Walmart behavior here that others talk about. I don't go to Walmart. But it is right across the road from the Winco grocery store we shop at in Ontario. One would think there would be some over flow. There is only one grocery store in Baker and the only pharmacy in town is in that store. You just don't see those people in that store. All I can think of that it must be a regional thing. Another reason to be glad I live where I do.

The local Walmart here and ones I’ve been to in surrounding counties, don’t have anything locked that I’m aware of.
They do have the greeter positions here but they really are more like receipt checkers than greeters. It’s a mix of big tough looking men, elderly women, and others.
Sometimes they just wave us on and sometimes some of them check everytime.
One time a while back a guy checking receipts said at that time the only reason had me stop was because I had a case of bottled water. He said they’d had trouble with people taking those and were instructed to check anybody that had water.
Years ago they put in a few of the self checkouts, but closed them down after a year or so, citing too much theft. Now like everything else they’ve gone back to using self checkouts. We very rarely go through the self checkouts if real cashiers are available,
The store often looks like it’s been ransacked. One of my pet peeves is items being misplaced, so it really grates on my nerves. Really dislike when cold food items are left in unrefrigerated non food aisles.
Last night somebody had thrown down their fast food French fries and containers in the middle of an aisle.
Then some cereal boxes had been opened.
We now check most of our items. A few weeks ago we saw some cartons of oats that had been opened and spilled, and the carton we took home appeared ok, but when I opened the lid the cardboard top had been torn open.
The bottled water is often ransacked and strown about.
On the subject of dogs in the store, a while back a very disheveled looking man that probably hadn’t had a bath in a long time, had a dog that was equally as unclean. My wife was looking for something in an aisle close to them, the dog jumped up on her. She was not very happy about that as she didn’t want fleas or mange on her. She was polite about it to him and just passed it off as no big deal.
Our local Rural King clientele almost rivals the prize winning Walmart shoppers
I figure that there’s more stuff probably stolen from RK than Walmart now.

Yeah, maybe there are places like that but thankfully I've never seen one. Maybe I just frequent the good neighborhoods...

It may well be a regional thing as there is probably a lot higher population density say here than there.
We have a Krogers not far from Walmart and there is crossover overflow patronage to both.
We try to avoid going to either one at the first of the month. Toward the end of the month they tend to be less busy.

I reckon a lot of it has to do with exactly that, the good neighborhoods.
Here we have a range of folks from well off to a large homeless/transient population and every where in between,
If anybody grocery shops in our town they have one Krogers, one Walmart and one Save A Lot to choose from, well then there’s the 6 Dollar Generals, but that’s not the likely place that most folks do the bulk of their grocery shopping at. For most it’s Krogers or Walmart or if like us a combination of both. Certain things we buy at one or the other and Save A lot is a smaller grocery store closer to where we live that is handy to stop at if we need something in between grocery runs. They only stock very basic items, and not much selection like the bigger stores.
Pretty much everybody goes to the big stores so there’s a cross section of the area population there about any time.
The thing is the pajama wearin folks, or the folks fighting in parking lots, or the ones that come up soliciting money, or the ones that smell like a port a pot, are the ones that you remember rather than the ones that are dressed decently and quietly go about their business.
