If I didn’t like cattle and owning land so much it sure is tempting to sell out and just put it in a cd for the interest.

I would have taken 500 cash, gone and said here, I am taking her... and taken that poor heifer out of there...just because she deserves better... plus reported them to the animal welfare/control or at least my vet... so they could never own another animal.....and then tried to see if she could at least be saved and fed and given a little better life for a little while.
God, I HATE people like that.....

Son and I have discussed that very subject... at least selling out half..... and getting some things paid off and then maybe buying back some, in a few years when the craziness levels out...
So, instead, we have another 14 heifers we kept and turned out.....:rolleyes:....

I don't think it's a bad idea to keep heifers. You can always sell them if prices stay high, but if there's a downturn they can be bred. With the lower cattle numbers heifers are kind of a hedge bet.

Basically our thinking...at least there are options with keeping the heifers like you said.... they will get re-evaluated in a few months.... sold 12 "off the bottom" out of this last bunch... and kept these as possibles... Have the spring calving cows with their calves..... 2 to 1 bulls (steers) to heifers... so will have another 20-25 heifers to look through late this fall. I think there are about 70-75 cow/cf pairs... 2 sets of twins out there.... The steers most likely will all get sold... maybe right off the cows .... with the way the prices are...
But that is several months off... so we will see... there will be a few heifers culled out also I am sure...
Fall calving cows just starting, have 3 new ones on the ground this week. Also have 3 new calves on the 12 first calf heifers, that are starting to calve..... see several making some udders so should see some more calves shortly...

I bet they get good minerals and you have some high protein coming from somewhere to get that many bull calves.

Probably just dumb luck... I think it was about 60/40 heifers to bulls last fall.... Have one bull that throws more bulls than heifers every time... and one that tends to run more heifers also... but both the easy calving bulls we have used are running more bull calves to heifers....1st calf heifers have had 2 to 1 bulls to heifer calves both last fall and this spring... be interesting to see what this fall group does... so far 2 bulls to 1 heifer calf.... Been keeping track of that just for curiosity... interested to see what this fall brings in the cows calving..... I have to look it up but we seem to get more heifers in the fall if I am not mistaken...

Heavy minerals and protein prepare the environment (PH levels) where male sperm is more successful. You might not even know you're doing it. High carbs and less minerals stimulate the environment that female sperm works best in.

I think they should ban listing cattle, even any animal, on Craig list... too painful to view. Making money off sad-sympathy for abused animals is wrong.

Better that the abused animals get a chance to be bought by someone that will care for them than staying in that situation and starving.

Here is a positive craigslist post. Yearling heifers, five of them, asking price was $16,000. It says sold. Knoxville, TN listing. Hope he got asking price.

This bull was for sale on a Facebook site as a future herd bull, has papers, I don’t know much about cattle papers but I know cattle and I don’t care what his papers say, this guy wouldn’t even be a good looking steer in my book.

You can certainly see ALL of his "structure". Cut off his nuts and get some feed in him. Wow.
