I don't know why this messed with my brain for awhile but let me write just as it was and see if it confuses anyone else. Me and a friend split the cost on 8 bred heifers, 1 bred cow and 1 open heifer. 8 bred heifers and 1 bred cow were $1050 each and 1 open heifer was $800 for a total of $10250. OK, so my friend left a $200 deposit and I left a $100 deposit. So, when we went back we owed $9950. I gave the seller a $9950 check and the seller gave me a check for $1050 because we ended up not buying one of the bred heifers because she was crazy wild. My friend gave me a check for $4250, when you add his $200 deposit he has spent $4450. How much of the $1050 check does my friend get back?

The original total was $10250, of which $1050 was returned to you. Now the total spend is $9200/2=$4600 per person.

Your partner has paid a total of $4450.

You keep the $1050 and your partner owes you $150.

Total purchase price $10250-$1050=$9200 total price of cattle.

The $1050 was simply a refund on your check of$9950 for over payment, so the check for $1050 is yours it was originally out of your pocket. $9950-$1050=$8900+$100+$200=$9200 (total price of the cattle).

$9200/2=$4600 each.
Friend paid $200+$4250=$4450
You paid $9950-$1050=$8900-$4250=$4650+$100=$4750
$4750+$4450=$9200
Friend owes you $150. $4450+$150=$4600, your end $4750-$150=$4600
