I was checking on a group of heifers at another farm a couple nights ago, gave them a bucket of grain and went back to the truck to get the fly rubs to put up when I heard a big to-do back at the troughs. One of the heifers, about 700lbs or so, had got knocked over in the feed bunk and was stuck in there upside down. Had to push the bunk over to get her out. Kinda makes you wonder...

How deep are your feed bunks ?

Good thing you were there.

Did you push the bunk and cow over by hand ?

Was it a Pinz ?

It was one of those standard 10' feeders from the co-op. Belongs to the owner of the farm. I'm too tight to buy them, make my own out of 55 gallon plastic barrels. Cheaper, plus they lay on the ground, hopefully a cow could get out of them.

Yes, she was enough off-center that I could push it.

No, it was a baldy. Not the best heifer, but has a lot of sentimental value.

I've never really understood their facination with these feed bunks. I have had several end up in them but my yearling bull likes to put both front feet in it - guess he likes the feeling of being taller. Does it almost every day.
