Cleanup bull

Help Support CattleToday:

We wait 24 hours after last cow is AI'd. I had read that their is a less than 2% chance at that point that the cleanup bull would mess up your AI work.

We are commercial so the main thing we worry about is getting them bred.

I'll kick AI-ed cows out to the bull 12-24 hours or so after I breed 'em.
We breed based on observed heats...usually AIing as they're going out of standing heat, 10-12 hours or so after seeing them stand.
I figure if I kick 'em back out to pasture with the bull, the next day after ... they're so far from being in standing heat that he's not gonna do anything more than sniff 'em 'just to make sure', and even if he DID serve 'em... those AI sperm have at least a 12-24 hour head-start on his...

If you mass AI using a synchronization program and would like to verify parentage at preg check, talk with your palpator to see what they are comfortable with. I try to get producers to leave bulls out 10 days or so after breeding and preg check 90 days or sooner if they want me to stand behind which sire they are out of. I'm sure a good ultrasounographer could do better.
