According to data from USDA's Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) Charolais cattle had the 5th heaviest birthweight average out of 25 breeds they analyzed. Chianina, Maine Anjou, Nellore and Brahman were the only breeds with heavier average weights.
We've never had Charolais cows or bulls, but we have fed several Charolais and Charolais cross steers. In general they have had some of the poorest dispositions of the cattle we have fed.
In fairness to Charolais breeders, I do believe that many Charolais producers have recognized that their cattle have a bad reputation for disposition. Consequently, they have done a better job of eliminating problem cattle over the past several years, which has probably reduced the % of knot heads in the Charolais breed.
