Been busy finishing up the fall semester at school, but I finally got done and got to come home for a few days. Just wanted to share some pics I took a few days ago and get thoughts on our replacement heifers we have been gathering the last couple years.
Started out the day with our very first experience with the neighbor's bull showing up in our pasture. One of our yearling heifers was in heat and we found him hanging out with them. Going to lutelyse all the heifers in a month or so to make sure they aren't bred to him.
Yearling Heifers
Above mentioned heifer. #75 Hereford/Brangus
#74. Hereford/Brangus
#76. Commercial Angus. Took a chance buying this heifer. I was helping my cousin that I buy all my heifers from load up a herd of cows he had bought and this heifer and her dam were the last to load. He said the man that owned the herd only bought moderate, but very stout Angus bulls for the last 20 years. She was out of a very good looking, moderate first calf heifer and was big compared to her contemporaries. Thats all I really know about her.
#1106. Our only heifer born on our place this year. Out our #63 cow(later in the post).
2 year old Heifers
#69 and her heifer calf. South Poll/Angus
#70. South Poll/Angus
#71. Hereford/Brangus
#72 and her bull calf. Hereford/Brangus
#73. Hereford/Brangus
#1104. One of our heifers we raised. She is out of a brangus-type cow.
Since I took these pictures, all of these heifers have calved without assistance. I'm going to try to snap a few pictures this week and put them up.
Cows
#67 and #68. Our first South Poll/Angus heifers we bought getting ready to have their second calves.
#68 and #63
#63 again
#8 and her new heifer. Best cow in the herd IMO. 349 day ave. calving interval on 7 calves. Every calf has been the high selling steer in the group. First heifer calf.
Cows weren't supposed to calve til after New Years, but the bull must have jumped the fence and dad didn't tell me....oh well. I hope you enjoyed the pictures. I know the pictures aren't the greatest, but please comment on what you think of our little herd. We are trying to grow as fast as we can afford and I want to see what some more experienced eyes think about the future of our cowherd. Thanks for taking a look and War Eagle!
