What to do with a cow that won't let her calf suckle? They're currently fenced together in small space. Cow pushes and kicks calf away.

Ellen; I just went through that this spring with a first calf heifer. I kept them penned where they were next to each other but not together. Twice a day, I would turn the calf in and see if momma would take it. If not, then I would put her in the squeeze shute and force her to nurse the calf. When I had the cow in the shute, I gave her a little sweet feed in a shallow bucket. On the evening of the fourth day, when I turned the calf in, momma let her nurse. After that I kept them penned up together for about a week and then let them out in the pasture with the others. That's what worked for me. Good luck,
Mack
: What to do with a cow that won't let her calf suckle? They're currently fenced together in small space. Cow pushes and kicks calf away.
