Maybe I missed the reason to start with Herefords but I would be hard pressed to advise anyone to start that way.
There are a lot of people who buy sale cattle and resale on Craigslist. I've went and looked at some and called the guy out before. Advertising they were cutting back while I could see the glue from a tag on one old cow.
I don't understand the dislike of salebarn cattle. I buy a lot and it's just a matter of judging what you want in cattle. I always figure if they have a solid mouth, uniform bag and no hoof problems I'm probably okay. I have definydone better buying older cows compared to four or five year olds. But if you can buy a full mouth cow and have theee or four calves and get the same money back out of her that's a win in my book.
Any reason I shouldn't start with Hereford?
I know Hereford, that's all we've ever had along with baldies. Theyre docile and make good milkin' mommas.
I can cross them with any mainstream breed and produce a calf that the markets want to buy. From my viewpoint they make a great foundation breed to build a herd that can go in any direction.
With that said I'm 100% open to other breeds. Just haven't been convinced otherwise.
I think that's a great choice IMO .
I prefer a red cow I can change the bull and produce a uniform calf crop the buyer wants.
Black bull black baldies Brangus Red or Black makes Super baldies.
Char and you get yellow baldies.
With a black cow your stuck secondly I can buy the red cow cheaper and still produce a black calf.
