Buying from sale barn?

Has anyone bought cows from the sale barn and bred them to a top terminal bull. Would this be a good cheap way to get somone started in cattle? Right now in Canada prices are down and cows at the sale barn are going cheap. Would the use of a top AI sire influance the calf of a mix breed cow to were it would be a good feeder?
