We're getting pretty close to calving. Cows are due about Mar 1 with a few due a bit earlier cause a bull got out. Yesterday we finished penning up all of our bred heifers except one, I'll get her in the next few days. We have it set up so that we can just catch them at the watering bowl and then pen them where we want them. With 230+ head it works OK if you have time on your hands, and with cattle that aren't too spooky. As we get closer to and during calving we'll start bringing the whole herd in and sorting, that way we don't accidentally miss someone that is really close to calving, especially if it is going to be cold out.

So today I went out and got some pictures of our bred heifers. Quite a lot of them are showing quite a bit and I think we should have a lot of them calve out pretty early.

One of my favorite heifers. Home raised GV/ANx AN

Here's a couple of half sisters they're both out of Red Brf (HHxAN) and the same Hereford sire, I'm not really happy with how they've grown out so far... They have a few other 1/2 sisters that are better than them but most don't impress me much. Guess we'll see how they raise a calf. These are all home raised heifers.

The heifer pen, where they will stay until they calve.

The adopted calf.... Mama is a good cow that had a preemie the other day. Neighbours had a twin. Took about 24 hours for them to pair up!

And, lastly one of the cows that got bred a bit earlier than the rest...

Love your pictures... many of your cows/heifers look a LOT like ours. We've got a lot of the same mix as you. One of these days I'll find some time to do the photobucket thing and put up a couple.

Thanks guys, we are pretty happy with the way most of them are looking.

Putangitangi, it was only slightly below freezing yesterday. It is unfortunately, supposed to get pretty cold for the next week or so, down to -28 C. I really hope the girls can hold off till it warms up a bit! They really aren't due til Mar 1. Hopefully it will be a nice March for us this year, I think we deserve it after last year!
