Birds in fruit trees....

Help Support CattleToday:

I keep bird feeders in my trees year round and do not spray for any insects appears that the birds keep the insects at bay.

I have been an orchardist for 30 years. Reflectors, ribbons, hawk kites etc are all a waist of time. They work for a short time only. Shooting works well for some species but not others. Letting birds have a share only encourages more. There is a spray called deter but we didn't have a lot of success with it. Netting is your best option but the net needs to go to the ground. The odd bird will still find a way in and anything they can reach from the other side of the net will be lost. We had 45 acres of orchard so shooting combined with gas canons was most efficient in our situation. In the commercial world we pick the fruit before fully ripe so that helped a lot but not with plums or cherries or figs!!
