Basin Angus Ranch Sale

Help Support CattleToday:

I have watched some of the sale on RFD-TV and was surprised at the prices being paid for most of the bulls. There were some good bulls but just by the appearance on TV, it appeared there were a lot of so-so bulls bringing $2-5K.

You are right about the prices being brought. the trouble with just "watching" the sales on Superior is, if you don't have the EPD's and figures in front of you and analyze the animals being run through the sale ONLY from a Phenotypical point of view, you have only part of the statistics on that animal. And it is NECESSARY to be able to consider the individuals being sold from an INFORMED vantage point, with knowledge of the individuals themselves, or with the sale catalog in front of you, otherwise you are subject to your own visual observation of the phenotype and the verbal information being fed to you by the sale manager and the auctioneer(s) - which sometimes is skewed in favor of the seller!  The more informed one is, the more impervious one is from possible mis-information.

"The Eye of the Master Breeds (Feeds) His Cattle" is a very factual Proverb, but it takes MORE than just the EYE to adequately differentiate and make a distinction between "good bulls" and individuals of higher acceptability for today's market. The economy having taken a down-turn recently (for a variety of reasons!), makes it imperative and mandatory that the Breeder purchasing seedstock ABSOLUTELY KNOWS what he is bidding on and attempting to buy, and the reasons WHY he is adding THOSE particular genes to his herd. Guess-work and 'chance-taking' has gone by the board!

Throwing darts at a televised auction sale on the basis of observed phenotype only will buy you a ton of trouble! The beef cattle breeder is at a point in time right now where the rubber meets the road, and unless you have your goals, plans, protocols and "ducks" in a row, you would be wise to either get smart or get out of the business. Getting smart is more fun and much more profitable.
