Bad reaction to sedation

Help Support CattleToday:

Buck R. is on it.
Back in the day, we had to use the Cap-Chur tranq. dart gun a lot... way too many of our clients had nothing in the way of facilities.
I hated that thing. You could never count on reproducible results - you could shoot two 1000 lb cows with the same dose of xylazine(Rompun)... one might be down and out for the day within 5 minutes, the other one *might* slow down enough in 20-30 minutes that you could try to slip up on her from behind and drop a rope on her - then she was up and ready to fight/run again.
I killed more than one with it... but if they'd had a pen or chute... it wouldn't have had to happen.

Yes. I've had this happen both to a cow and a dog. The reasons they have given me is "hypertension". I had a protocol written for me from a vet specialist. We have to administer the drugs differently and provide fluids. We follow the protocol every time now and haven't had any issues. Most vets use a one size fits all but sometimes you get an animal that will get hypertension under sedation. I think I paid $400 for the protocol. The dog I refer to that had this under sedation flat lined under general anesthesia. Have had no issues since with the protocol.

Whats this reversal yaw speak of? My vet said there is no reversal.

Our vet used Rompun and Ketamine. There was a reversal for one, but I don't remember which. He doesn't normally use it on calves, but they don't normally stop breathing either. He reversed mama cow and she was up pretty quick. Still groggy for about 30 minutes, but up and looking around.

Is that why ketamine is given with Rompun?

It's not necessarily done that way.
I almost never used Rompun in cattle unless I had to shoot 'em with the tranquilizer gun.
If I had to 'sedate' one for a procedure like a C-section or foot trim... I used straight ketamine IV; nothing else. They went down fast, stayed down for 30 to 45 minutes max with no depression, and got up with minimal wobbliness pretty quickly.
I could do a C-section, skin-to-skin, by about the time they started wiggling/kicking... would finish suturing, untie them and get out of the way, 'cause they were getting up as soon as the ropes were off.
No worries about cardiac/respiratory depression, bloating, etc.

Doesn't some of the sedation drugs cause abortions?
Xylazine can, but I think it's dose dependent. I've used it for light sedation on pregnant cows with no problems.
