Anyone every play or shoot marbles?

Do you recall playing Jacks?

Man, that brings back some memories. Used to shoot marbles all the time when I was in grade school. It was a big thing at the time. Had a nice lttle collection I carried around in my marble bag that I was pretty proud of. All I can remember was Cat's Eyes, Aggies, and Indians. Wish I knew what happened to them.

I remember jacks, too, but don't remember playing. Where I grew up that was more for the girls.

oh yeah...I loved playing marbles. Carried them around in a little purple bag. ;-)

All I can remember is cat's eye. :? Didn't play jacks much.

Never played marbles. We always wanted to, thought it would be cool ~ but no one knew how.
I loved playing jacks. I would still play jacks with my girls if they were interested.

We got shut down too. We used to play Ring Taw but one of the players mom complained about her son constantly losing his marbles and shut us down. That was the point of the game.

Does anyone remember the name of the clear one's?

Playing marbles is great 8) Just don't start losing them.

Yup, marbles were big sport during my grade school days.

I gave mine away when I left home and a copule of years ago had to buy some to put in a chick waterer. Had a hard time finding any, had almost as hard a time paying so much for them.

Gosh.......so long ago. Wasn't it something like purle or peerie or prairie or glassy.........gosh folks, I played marbles in the early 1950s. There's days now I can't remember what I had last night for supper.

Never played marbles, older brother was in to the marble playing though, he is seven years older than me. Our game at school was with tops. I think they were made by Duncan the same folks that made the yo-yo. To play the game we would draw a circle in the dirt about 24 inches in diameter. Each player had to toss a top into the ring. You would take another top and try to knock the ones out of the ring. If your top died in the ring then you had to leave it and use another. The tops with the sharp points would spin in one place. The top would stop spinning at the end of the rotation and start laying down and then roll out of the ring. Some of the tops were better at pulling themselves out of the ring at the end of their spinning. I have seen tops split in halve by the sharp point tops. Also they made a top that was round pointed, when it was spinning it would walk all over the ring. When it laid down at the end of its spinning then it just stopped and did not move. The object of the game was to knock tops from the ring and then have your spinning top either walk from the ring or pull it self out at the end of its spinning. You were supposed to keep the tops you knocked from the ring, but we never did. To many teachers watching. I sure would like to find some of the old tops for the grand boys, but I have not been able to.

The wife and I were both born in '54. I had marbles but didn't really play. The wife used to shoot marbles with her grandma all the time. We both played a lot of jacks. The wife still plays jacks with our grandkids.

Yep, resess at school. One of my best gifts was a leather marble bag, so I didn't need to wrap them up in my hanky anymore. My favorite was a big bumblebee. I alwas thought the kids with steelies were cheating. Outside we drew a circle in the dirt, inside used a string.

Trust me on this one :???: At least for "upnort" The clear marbles were known as "PURIES" [sp] I'm not sure about :help: But the "PURIES" were the TOP  What every marble shooters goal was  To get the other guys PURIE. But when you lost one :cry2: :cry2: would ruin your day. :(

Loved marbles...jacks were for the gals.
Have a friend that put a garden where a old school yard from the turn of the century (the one before last) once was and now spendsmore time screening for the old marbles than gardening. He has a nice bag full now. Dmc
Jacks were not fun when one of your kids left them out and you stepped on one during the night!
