Anyone every play

i find marbles all over. i'm like where do they all keep coming from? just out in the yard in random places. in the field. wherever. i guess some poor feller has done lost his marbles.

We called the clear ones crystals. I've got a shoe box full of marbles somewhere. Won most of them playing keepsies at recess in 6th grade. I find marbles all over too, beefy. Mostly around long disappeared homesteads or tenant houses. Finding one always makes me imagine some barefoot kids in overalls ages ago on hands and knees in the dirt shooting marbles under the shade of a big oak tree..

Anyone remember those chrome visors that people put over the headlights of their car that had those big clear marbles in the center of them?
Western Auto sold them years ago. You could buy all kinds of dress up stuff for your car from your local western auto store. Fender skirts,continental kits,twin antennas,mud flaps,cherry bombs,and all kinds of doll up lights. Course most on here are probably not old enough to remember,just the ol fartz like me.
Anyhow I stole the marble off one of them on my dad's 39 plymouth pickup. Was not too hard for him to figure out who done it. Ain't forgot that one yet.

We didn't play marbles but game with quarters. There was two simple ways to play: you would throw a quarter against a rock wall outside and whoever got closer to the wall got to keep the other person's quarter. Or you would each spin a quarter at the same time on a table top and whomever's spun the longest got to keep the other's. Wow! that was gambling at an early age.

One day went home with almost $5 in quarters, thought I had the world figured out. Then lost everyone of them the next day. Eventually teachers stopped us, it was a sad day.

Cal I remember that stuff...You left off the "cub feelers". J.C. Whitney use to sell a lot of "add ons" for cars of all makes. I remember putting a white racing stripe up the hood, over the top and down the back of a red Volkswagon...A real "hot rod". Even that VW had a "big back seat". :lol: :oops:

Trust me on this one :???: At least for "upnort" The clear marbles were known as "PURIES" [sp] I'm not sure about :help: But the "PURIES" were the TOP :shock: What every marble shooters goal was :roll: To get the other guys PURIE. But when you lost one :cry2: :cry2: would ruin your day. :(

You are so right. We also had "steelies" which were considered more valuable than the "puries". Most of them came from wheel bearings. I still have my bag and my marbles. :D :D

Steelies were outlawed in my marble league. Ever seen a steelie from a train car wheel bearing? Crystals could be bought by the bag for a dime at Woolsworths. They had no value at all. The ones we prized most were the bumblebees or yellowjackets. They couldn't be bought at Woolsworths.

I was glad when the steelies were outlawed in our league too. I had one of those pretty clear green one's which was my favorite marble in the world. It shattered after getting smacked by a ball bearing. I was so upset I had to go home and drown my sorrows with some milk and niller wafers. :nod:

Never did that, but played odds or evens a LOT. I just loved to gamble. Especially when I won.
Teacher nor principal never caught us.

Two contestants stand a few feet apart facing each other. Feet together. Theytake turns throwing knives in ground near the others foot.,, but within a given distance of foot, like 18 inches or whatever.
If my knife sticks up within that distance of opponents foot, then he has to move that foot over that far.

First one to get stretrched out and falls loses.
But if you hit your opponents foot when throwing, you are disqualified.

Basically glorified tag in the dark outside at night with neighbor kids. But you know what I think about the dark :shock:

I had a hard time hiding cause the ghost hid alone, had a hard time seeking cause ya never knew where they were gonna jump out at you from. Geeze, just talking about it now makes me reach for my inhaler...

That and mumbly peg were 2 of the most common, then came lagging pennnys (we were poor kids). Funny that carrying a knife in your pocklet, even to school was normal and accepted. Now you would get suspended or worse.

They suspend you now for a butter knife in your pick-up, in the parking lot. It was on the news a few years back. "NO TOLERANCE"

Worst I remember was a teacher taking up a knife because someone was playing with it during class. No different than playing with a yo-yo. If you kept the knife in your pocket, no problem. We often went hunting together after school. All the gear was in the truck out in the parking lot including shotguns. Not much different than fishing poles in the spring.

Marbles were great and steelies were indeed prized. Dad busted down a worn out old bearing for me and it gave me a bunch of steelies. I traded them for tons of marbles. I lost a lot of them initially, but then became proficient won a bunch with a good "shooter". Generally gave a lot of marbles to other poor kids who had little, often winning some back. If we ever bought marbles from the store, I don't remember it.

When the teachers started monitoring hard on the play ground and we couldn't "play for keeps" most of us quit playing. It never made a lot of sense because we always gave the lessor marbles to kids who had none.

All you marble shooters need to round up those old marbles - could be worth big bucks now! I've seen some in antique magazines that were worth a pretty penny. Some of the really pricey ones are clear with little animals inside - usually jungle animals if memory serves me right.

I was just outside, and we have new snow. The street in front of our building was like a canvas, so I made a huge "Fox and Goose" track. Probably people from the south have not played, but anyone from the north remember playing Fox and Goose?
