Agriculture and Idiots

I have been around and lived in enough places to understand more than just the lifestyle of those in agriculture. I also understand that most people in the cattle world are viewed as poorly educated heathens that lack skills viewed as basic in society.

I know that many people in agriculture are very well educated whether it is formal or informal education. The part that aggrivates me is that some in ag have the notion that it is their duty to act as completely stupid as possible. Why must we confuse a rich heritage of working with the land and shunning all educated ways of communication. I guess my point is that if we want to be taken seriously we should try as an industry to improve oursleves and portray our strnegths rather than to glory in our ignorance.

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association does a survey every few years asking, among other things, the education level of members. The percentage of members with a degree surprised me. I can't remember what it is now, but well over 50%. I'm sure it's a higher percentage than many other industries in the US. But there are fools everywhere, degree or not.

Can you give an example of people acting as stupid as possible as duty dictates? I don't think I've run into any of that............

I dont know anyone personally in AG whether they are a row cropper or Cattleman, that I would term as ignorrant.I do know several that have bought Cattle and not known anything about them and then suffer terrific setbacks with them and call it quits, which for the most part, was a good thing.

As a whole, I think we have some pretty good mentors out there, and some darn good folks following their advice.I've said it before that I deal with fellers on a daily basis that can hardly sign their name on a check, but as far as being ignorrant, just because the times they were raised in dictated hard work, and Education was sidelined, does not make them a fool.

I CAN think of a few places that I have passed by on the road; that I looked at and thought THAT guy is doing a terrible job with that herd/ that farm. I don't think that was what Beef 11 was referring to; but to pretend that every farm/ranch is managed as well as it could possibly be managed MIGHT be stretching the truth some.

i dont think beef11 is talking about the way farms or ranches are managed or operated.i think he is referring to what city people think of us.they think we have tobe dumb to farm or ranch or milk cows.an that we have no learning at all.but hey its us who work 18hr days 7 days a week so this nation an world can eat.an so people can have resonable priced food.

really made me question OUR intelligence. IF you stop and think about it: 98% of the population could not make it 20 days without us selling them the fruits of our labors....then WHY don't we rule this country??? Are we just too nice?......or too stupid??

I think we just can't get together to form a good cattle coop.

Think about the john wayne movie with mr tunstin getting shot while trying to form an alliance with other ranchers on his way to see the govenor. Dont remember the name of the movie but them boys had some guts and grit.

I wasn't raised that way. We were and are land rich and money poor.

I saw the movie. It was Chisum about the Lincoln County land wars. I don't know if it is factual or not.

I have about every type of life style living around me I don't have to leave home to see. This has come about in the last 20 years. I am the only one in my community that tries to make a dollar off the land. All my neighbors think I am stupid for tending cattle and destroying the environment (neighbors call what I do)

Most ranchers and farmers will never organize. If they wanted to be organized they would have gone to the city and got a job within the union.

Most rancher and farmers I know is not stupid most have a business degree or some higher education than high school.

I go to the auction barn am amazed how sharp a person has to be if you are going to compete with those people and make a profit.

Rancher and farmers are not stupid or ignorant. If they are successful they are hard working and a dam good manager.

I don't really care what they think of me. I enjoy life and treat it like a game. Just as in a game of cards, I prefer not to show what I have in my hand.
