Great, soggy calf! What did she weigh at birth? What is her dam's average weight? Are you keeping her for a replacement heifer?

The heifer weighed 63 lbs BW. She is an ET calf. Here's a photo of her dam, OK Sadie, taken a month or two before
her first natural service calf:

And here is a photo of the sire, Rockliffe Patron:

Both Sadie and Patron have the 6 "stars" on the Bovigen
tenderness gene test---the newer one(which has an
additional 2 "stars" is not yet available in the usa). So the
heifer calf should also have all 6 "stars" for tenderness.
Sire and dam also have one "star" on marbling--it was
one out of 2---we have not gone back to retest for any
more of the newer marbling factors.

Sadie weighs between 1100 to 1250, depending on the
forage year. Patron weighed around 2000 or 2100.

This heifer will be sold in our internet auction going
from Oct 7th through the 13th. There's a few "sample"
animals shown on the auction site and I am adding
photos of animals to be in this sale as they come in to
me----and as I get my photo chores done. Here's a link to the
"gallery" page of the software:

What's the frame score on those animals? I like the overall appearance of the cattle. I would have guessed them heavier but that's based on our experience with our Herefords averaging 1400 lbs at maturity.

I admit to guessing the weight on Sadie---and am not very
good at it actually. We only set up our scale once
per year when we bring all the calves home for weaning....
it is a real pain in the buttocks to drag it out and get it
set up. I wish we had a permanent place to leave it
fixed and ready to go.

She is a frame 4 and the bull, Rockliffe Patron was
supposed to be a frame 5. He was from Tasmania,
and was active/living in the late 80's early 90's as I
recall. We don't have much of the semen left and will
likely use it up on flushing. We sure had some nice
bull calves out of him this year; this was the first year
we had his calves. Some of his embryos will be in the
auction---mated with Sadie. She had 17 good ones
on her first flush.

Lovely top line on OK Sadie and great flush figures! So wish we were in the same country to bid on some of your animals!

We just weighed our dark grey sire Xtra at the weekend-he's a 5 year old and weighed 1070kgs- 2166lbs. Not bad just coming out of winter where he has only had pasture of sorts and hay.
Mating season for us here starts early October.

I don't doubt that weight on a frame 4. There's a lot of beef in that cow. Bull's got a lot of beef on that frame 5, too. Most of our cows are frame 5, so that's what I use to judge weights.
A frame 4 cow that weighs 1200 lbs in good condition is a very efficient animal and can produce steers that finish at 1200 very nicely.

Jeanne,

Do I understand that you flushed her dam as a heifer? What breed was the recip?

Sadie was born in March 2003, and we flushed her in
June 2006---not as a heifer. The recip was a Murray
Grey. We have to get tail hair and DNA test for
parentage to send in as we register her. Our assoc
requires DNA parentage verification on all ET calves,
but not AI calves.

I discussed your proposal with 14Blue. She talked it over
with some of her sisters and a half-brother. They all
agreed to come to your place to live. She said to bring
a big trailer , plan to spend the night here at the farm, and they would do their best to entertain you for the next
12+ years ;-)
