A shout out about the drought.

can't rotate cattle back because the grass hasn't grown. it sucks, but that's life. if it was easy everybody would do it.

Well, let's put it this way, we're feeding hay. No reason to rotate here, there's nothing to rotate to. I keep telling myself that it'll rain some day. Hope it's sooner than later.

The month or two of no rain happens here practically every year and then we get 100 degree heat that zaps all the moisture out of the ground. I keep the low pasture (on the river bottom) strictly for hay production and it is my last resort alternative if the cows have to have something to graze. Once it is gone, you either have to supplement hay or else sell them or else irrigate. Some years I do all three.

Amen to that brothers!
I have never prayed for a hurricane to come off the gulf and come up the east coast before, but I am doing it now!

Took a run to Madisonville to pick up some beef I had butchered last week and it seems you boys north of the Hiawassee river are not to bad off. I saw plenty of green pastures and second cuttings being made.
Anybody got about 10 bales they can spare for my horses?
Orchard grass or timothy would be nice.

Rustler, it looks like the hurricane season is finally kicking off and maybe some of the tropical storms will come our way.

I am with you and believe it has to rain soon,,,I HOPE :)

We should all go down to the Gulf and inhale real hard.

Maybe that one out there may come our way. ;-)

Bad part of the whole thing is that we have just now gotten into the driest season of the year here.

We may not have any hay, and the pastures may be drying up, but the 2-4-d sure is whooping the heck out of the weeds.   and I can see where I left off on the last I sprayed, so I can finish it up this weekend.

I am working on a new breed of cattle though.

They will not eat hay, and love weeds and nut grass and even eat dirt or Alabama red clay and they don't like their pictures taken, so no one can BLAST you about how bad they look.
There will be no docking at the barn, because they will be colorless.

and the registration will be free.

Be careful what you ask for. Obviously most of you haven't been thru the brunt of a hurricane before.

Last one to come dead over me was Opal. A few others a little smaller since.

I'll trade some rain for some 90 MPH winds again..........

I'm saying this with a straight face too. My grass is dead and we are coming into the dry season. :x

I have been through more than I can count, from Hurricane Donna to Opal with 100+ MPH winds, the hurricane we dont need, I just said a tropical storm with some good soaking all day rains with it.

I lived in Fla before I moved to se Alabama and I have had to leave my home in Clearwater on two occasions and had to help my sister a couple of years back when their home was leveled.

I've heard how bad it is around there....that's where we
were last year, i.e. no substantial rain from Oct 05 to
the late fall of 06---we were feeding hay in July 06.
I'm hoping the hurricane season will bring rain but no
damage to your area!

I'm at the gulf coast this week and am doing my part.Since I got here last Saturday, I already have one storm about to cross Cuba and come in the gulf. I have got it targeted to come up Mobile bay and arch up over NE Alabama, just like Opal did several years ago. I'll be here till Saturday, I should have the details worked by then. Stayed tuned.

I remember Opal, she packed quite a wallop!

Pray for rain, but please don't pray for hurricanes. I spent 2 days moving cattle before Rita, and when I was able to come back after the storm the only thing I had left was the cattle that I moved. Life can treat you bad somrtimes along the gulf coast. :(

lived in florida. went thru andrew in '95. wilma flooded my mother's house 2yrs ago. most people forgot about wilma because of katrina.
