16% feed

My goat and calf share a pen. They are now getting 14% feed along with free choice alfalfa. Three times a week I mix Timothy with the alfalfa. From what I'm reading, I may need to switch the goat to 16% as she begins to kid. There is a llama chow that has all the ingredients of the 14% dairy feed (grains, rolled corn, molasses, etc. Will the 16% be too much for the calf (now 6 months old?) I know I also need to check the ash, etc. percents on it. Thanks

Many years ago when we had the goat dairy, we fed alflafa hay and 13-14% grain to all of the milking does. These were does that were milking within the top 10-15% of all of the USDGA DHIA tested animals. If they didn't need higher protein then that I kind of doubt if the average one does. My point is, why change?
