Nice heifers! Saw a nice shorthorn cross heifer sell for 105- well startedtoo, just about ready to be only on grass. Shoulda bought her or even a smaller one -- got a milk goat giving a gallon and a half a day -- no need to buy replacement! Maybe this week-end-- holstein bull calves...

    Butcher cow - pregnant?

I read somewhere that a pregnant cow is the most tender meat there is- the hormones loosen the connective tissues so everything can expand. Susie

Milkmaid, I agree, after learning about cost, etc. of the hoof trimming, I think you should sell her ASAP. Good luck with the prices, hope you do well. Susie

    selling cull cows...question

Milkmaid, Why don't you spend the 8$ for her hoof trimming, keep her another month or however long it is before her hooves grow out and then ship her? Then she won't limp, have given you more growth off the calves, and had a little more time to get some weight on. Or ship her now and be done...

    Buying steer

Yes it seems like a good deal- We haven't looked at them yet, I'm pretty sure it's only because my neighbor is his friend that we are getting in on such a bargain. We did ask how many are available, because selling them occurred to us too, but we don't want to be greedy and take advantage . So...

    Buying steer

We have an opportunity to buy a steer/steers from a private party that is a friend of our neighbors. They are all BWF, weight ranging from weanling on up. Any size for 83 cents/lb. My question is which is the better deal a little one or a big one? We don't have tons of pasture, especially as...

Breeding small Hereford - which calving ease bull--??

I really don't know how old she is. Yes, we picked her up at the sales barn- funny thing, we had bought a bull the year before that ended up being from the same seller- we thought he was young too, bought him at 625 pounds, turned him into a steer , put him on grass, grain-fed him 60 days, one...

Breeding small Hereford - which calving ease bull--??

I'm looking for a bull for my small Hereford heifer. She's been cycling at least 3 months now, but she is very small. I'm not sure of her age, but when we got her in February or so, she was 325 pounds. She has since filled out, but is still short. Now I'd say she's 500-550 pounds, but like I...

    NEW CALF

It means try to get the calf to nurse from Mom. Do you have a headgate or sturdy post you coould restrain Mom and let calf nurse, or milk the mom out yourself and feed it to the calf. or go to the store and get milk replacer and maybe some more colostrum if you're going to bottle feed the...

    Dwarf?- 2 pic's

Thank you! I really like the calf too! I'm pleased with the cow too, she's turning out better than I thought. This year she's shedding her shaggy winter coat, last year we'd only had her a few months in the Spring, I believe she was selenium deficient because she never did lose that scruffy...
