Ethical Decision Making ... what would you do?

I think the vet should tell the client that he will take care of the dog and then give it to the humane socity for adoption. The vet should offer to set the leg so the pig will have some comfort. At no cost if necessary.

What kind of feed do you use?

Why want you feed coastal to horses? My horses lived entirely on coastal and grass. Now that was well fertilized coastal.

I guess the trip from Texas to Wisconsin with my 16' trailer and three heifers just took on a new twist.

    got our cows

I would get an Registered Angus or Brangus bull. The are easy calvers and will turn the entire herd black and get away from that "Rainbow Collitation" look. Then if you are not happy with the calves I would look for another type of bull after you know more. In you area, Houston, I would use the...

    Hay/pasture and mineral

Minerals act on the cows the same way chocolet works on people. If you haven't had much in a period of time you may eat a lot then tapper off. If it is offered often you may eat it a little. I crave sweets. If I go a week or so without them I crave them and will eat a lot if given the chance...

    Forage testing and minerals

I don't know where you are in WI, but in Jefferson County area (SCWI) I couldn't fine minerals for grazing beef cattle. I have to get my minerals when I go to see my family in Louisiana. They are salt controlled for intake therefore the cattle won't eat enough to harm them. I feed them free...

    Beef Tenderness

Maybe there is a place other than health of animals for the National Animal ID program. If we can trace a steak back to a cow and bull we might be able to adjust our breeding program with some since of accurcy. Harvest the cattle that produce a tough steak. :D

    Beefmaster traits....

They are half Brahman. I would think a breed with 3/8th Brahman would do better. Crossed with a contential or english breed they would have little if any ear but would have the good trates of the Brahman, easy calving, long life, gentel, and growthy. :D

First calf of season has finally arrived

You have a great attutude. I know what you are experienceing. I worked when I was developing my place. In the winter I never got home before dark. I fed at night and saw my cattle on weekends, even though I lived on the place. The weekends were work day on the ranch, every weekend. Vacations...

First calf of season has finally arrived

I could not agree with you more. But that was something I had to learn and I had not learned that at the time I applied the fertilizer. But, the fertilizer did knock out the broom sage. Also I found out Bahila (spelling) grass does like discing. So if you need to get rid of it, use that ground...

    Alright Hobby Boys

The NCBA has a program developed with Texas A&M and others called SPA. It is a free download on the NCBA web site. It is a very indepth analysis of the cost of cattle operations. Check it out and see what they say regarding cost classifications. I, on the other hand, don't consider depreation...

First calf of season has finally arrived

That actualy will work. I had a pasture like that in Louisiana when I purchased the ranch and all I had to do was fertilize. I also had the soil tested and adjusted the Ph after the sage was gone.

Respectfully, I must state land is to be considered. For Example, If we were buying or have bought stocks in the stock market and we were planning our personnel buget for that year we would need to buget for the stock purchase just like you have to buget for the land purchase. Neither investment...

    Horn weights

The best thing to do is use a polled bull and get rid of the horns. Seriously, it depends on how much you want to lower the tips. If the horns are set high, use the heaver, if not use a middle of the road wt. Put the wts on the tips about 1/2 inch from tip.

First calf of season has finally arrived

Good looking calf and cow. You will get rid of the broom sage if you fertilize with about 150 to 200 LBs per acre of a complete fertilizer, like triple 12 or triple 17. Broom sage does not like fertilizer.

First calf of season has finally arrived

That is the difference of using a registered bull and a commercial bull. You know the gentics when you use a reg. bull. :D

    Alright Hobby Boys

The land should be considered as opportunity investment. What could you make with the money if you sold the land? Therefore the land should be considered in the cost, even if it is paid for. If it is not paid for, what is the annual note and taxes? The point is if you hadn't invested in land...

Remmber, use the exposed cows to figure cost. The rest are free loaders and add to your cost.

    Alright Hobby Boys

I don't know how many breeding age cattle you have but you should be experiencing a 95% calf crop from the cows exposed and at lease 90% weaning calf crop to sell. If you are not then you may not be in the cattle business to make a profit, according to the IRS. To do that you must give the cows...

    Alright Hobby Boys

I use a program called COW COSTS to figure my cost. It only cost me about 60.00 to purchase and it ask all the right questions to give all the cost. It says a commercial producer should keep their production cost below 300 per producing cow to be the most profitable. You know the good times are...
