    Financial Thresholds

Well now, I was willing to talk to you and help you until you had to go and throw out that 4 handicap business!! Now you're on your own! Bullred (24 handicap) ;-)

    TIGER STRIPE CATTLE

Frankie, I would think that very few people are misled into thinking that Nolan Ryan personally owns every cow that's labled Nolan Ryan Tender Aged Beef. No more so than people believe that Bum Phillips, Earl Campbell, or Jimmy Dean own every pig that's used to make their bacon or sausage...

    Financial Thresholds

Very well said, JK. Razorback, I would only add that even though it is very hard to maintain a positive cash flow with a small operation (primarily because of the reasons JK listed above) that doesn't mean you shouldn't operate it as a business. In fact, if you are planning on taking advantage...

    TIGER STRIPE CATTLE

Hey fellas! At the end of the day the bottom line is the "the bottom line." Now here's a quote from the most recent cow/calf weekly. "King also found the $4.60/cwt. advantage for primarily Angus calves over those with some Brahman influence ("ear") in 2001 increased to $6.77/cwt. in 2004."...

    TIGER STRIPE CATTLE

Damage Report from (Tigerstripe) Spring Vaccination Roundup: One fractured pinky finger (mine) - caught between headgate handle and nearby post. One destroyed corral gate 10 foot section of torn down barbwire fencing. Squeeze chute knocked off the scale load bars and had to be repositioned...

    avg post partum interval pic

It's a very good thing. Anytime you can improve on one calf per year your money ahead. Good looking stock also.

    How soon?

I agree with Cypress. You should seperate them sometime soon. With Brahma influence cattle (which mature later) we seperate them from any bulls from weaning (6-7 mos) until first breeding at 15 mos. We probably could wait longer, but weaning time is the most convenient time to get it done.

    60 day breeding cycle

The objective is to get them out of the breeding pool. Some choose to do it immediately. Others will fatten and sale, or breed and sale, etc. Those are business decisions related to an individuals cost/day/cow. For a simplistic example, if your cost to carry a cow is $1.00/day (which is...

    Water trough size

If you have to manually fill the tank, and it's the only source of water, a rule of thumb is 40 gallons per head storage capacity with all tanks combined. That should give you about 100% safety factor under most conditions. Like has been said, if you have floats size is less relevant, but it's...

    Hobby Farmer Re-named

Campground, just for clarity's sake - isn't that the same "worthless" mascot that now wears the National Championship Banner???
  11. B

    I'm not a hobby farmer, not a rancher, I'm a sad sack.

You got a Kawasaki Mule? Heck, I'm having to tote them round bales around in my wheel barrow!!

    TYPE OF BULL???

Y'all sure that's not a Murray Grey??? Just kidding! Don't shoot!! :cboy:

    Alright Hobby Boys

I'll tell you Caustic, starting up an operation nowadays ain't cheap. I'd be embarrassed to tell you how much I spent last year to get back into the cattle business.

    Alright Hobby Boys

Just built a new 42X60 pole barn about 6 months ago. All in cost was just shy of $15K.

    Alright Hobby Boys

Caustic, You didn't mention depreciation. Did you figure that into the $393? I've just started my tax prep for the year, but with depreciation I'm coming up north of $500/hd.

    Cow Pregnancy Test

Yeah, Caustic, but then there's that whole ordeal of sitting there with the bull nervously looking over your shoulder waiting for the little plus or minus to appear. I can't stand the tension!! ;-)

    Loose fence post

Don't let it bother you Rocksprings. Those of us with good sense know what you were meaning.

    decisions, decisions

Of all the options you've discussed, I like the Angus bull on Gert cows the best. Good mommas with some ear, and a black calf with a little less ear. Don't think you'll go wrong there.

    Ex- renter cutting fence?

If it's getting cut in the same place I'd suggest a $69 game cam concealed well. Either that or put a pop knot on his head.

    Master cattlemen

How about poor white oilfield trash? I don't want to get left out! ;-)
