.22 mag works well, just don't shoot at the wings. We've had problems with them in S.W. Arkansas also. A year ago I checked on the cows late one afternoon and one of our young cows ( 2nd. calf ) had the calf laid up next to a fence with a treeline behind her and there was several of the...

    Clearing land

In our area you get paid by the ton. The price per ton depends on the type ( pine, oak, etc ) and size ( logs vs. pulpwood ) of the timber. ;-)

    300 AU pasture lease

My bad, I just glanced at the header. Thanks ;-)

    300 AU pasture lease

It'd have to be really good pasture for 300 acre to carry that many pairs with minimum feed to suppliment the grass. ;-)

maybe not the right place(thoughts and prayers needed)

You've got our prayers also. One of our granddaughters had almost the same thing happen to her with a weight bench except it was her 2nd. toe at the first joint. The Doctors didn't even try to reattach the toe since it wasn't the big toe which would have affected her balance later. She...

    What do you folks carry?

RAB, I carry a .22 Mag. and have used it for everything from small hogs ( ~100 lbs ) & yotes to Dun's possums on the half shell with no problems. You're right about having to shoot straight ( hit vital areas) but I thought that was the idea no matter how big a gun you use. ;-)

CATTLE AT LARGE TICKET-COSTS MORE THAN THE COW

I know this area pretty well, it's not what I'd think of as "the country", I wouldn't count on have a "understanding" judge. The few areas ( you have to get several miles off I-45 ) that have land/cattle are being pressured as more and more people are looking to get "out of the city" and buy...

When do you wean calves? Poll

Anything being sold is weaned on the trailer. For replacement heifers we target for about 6-7 months, sometimes they're just a little older. ;-)

    Starting Up with Cattle

Not knowing anything other than you have 200 acres and a little experence in the cattle business my advice would be the same as Dun's & Boogie's. Start out small, if you can't repair all your fences maybe try to get 40 - 80 acres in good shape, get your pens, barn in working order, have your...

    What is this plant?

Ken, we call it "shu-mate" around here, I always thought it was a type of mulberry. It's doesn't seem to grow in the pastures much, mainly in the woods. Hasn't been a problem for us. I know the deer love it! ;-)

    Unrolling bales

I agree with the posters who roll out their round bales but we do use a few hay rings where we winter our heifers. Pros: Cows don't tear up the pasture in wet weather. Meeker cows & calves don't have to compete as much. Less waste ( for us at least ). The scraps...

    rotational grazing

Dun, do you have a problem with manure build up just using one area to feed in all winter? I think I remember you saying that you don't feed alot of hay in a "normal" year so maybe that wouldn't be a problem for you. We try to feed over a 80 acre pasture during the winter, starting at one...

    Reluctant cows

Put your salt & mineral in the catch pen area. The ones that are hesitant to come in whether it's being shy/timid or smart/suspicious for anything else will come in for salt. If it contiunes to be a problem they need to go down the road. We have a "alley way" that is about 100 yds. long...

    Heifer Holding Pen

Anytime we move cattle (not just heifers ) to a new place we like to pen them for a few days. Give them a little feed, let them get used to the different sounds / smells, let them see that its is not a bad place just a different place. We do walk the fence line making sure there's no wires...

    Time to wean?

We wean replacement heifers for 6-8 weeks and then move them to another pasture thats closer to the house. The first winter they get just a little extra special treatment ( just a taste of grain every day to make them easy to catch ) They stay there until they've had their first calf and have...

How many cows to be full-time Rancher?

LA4, in that case it wouldn't matter if you had 100 head or 1,000 you're not going to "make a living" ranching very long. If you notice I pointed out that there was very little margin for error. JMHO ;-)

How many cows to be full-time Rancher?

I thought the topic was how many cattle it would take to be able to quit your day job. I would think that would include your personal living cost. Agree that you don't have to buy "new" equiptment but there is a certain amount of equiptment that you must have & maintain to run cows. There are...

    need better fence

If you've got 3 hot wires and they're still getting out I'd think it was time for some of those outlaws to ride off into the sunset. JMO ;-)

    Disposition Sign

Caustic, if they're just trying to blow a little snot in your back pocket does that mean they're high strung also? ;-)

    Cull Cow?

I had a tiger stripe like that for awhile, she was a little hard to pen and so she stayed on the place about 3-4 years longer than I wanted. She had 3 huge teats and 1 normal sized one but she always had a calf on time & unaided. The calf was always able to get plenty of milk from that one...
