    Help Me Understand.....

Everybody's got to stand a chance of making a profit. If the heavy calf brought the same per lb. as the lighter calf, there wouldn't be much chance left for the feeder, since you've already gotten a lot of the gain.

Cost of boarding a calf & temperment of Jersys?

The way I see it,you've answered your own question. You don't really want to do it, and you don't think they will follow through on their end. Just tell them no. They might be mad, but they'll get over it. It will be easier to do now than putting up with the hassle of doing something you don't...

    Trailer/truck floor beds

Happened right in front of me on the highway when I was in college. Load of fat cattle in an old gooseneck. Eight head went through. I stopped to help the guy. It was ugly, to say the least. They weren't his cattle and it wasn't his trailer. He was just helping out a neighbor. On top of the...

    Land lease Question

I can't tell you what to do, but I know what I'd do. It's a bitter pill for you, but it sounds like you will have to swallow it. You did sign the lease. Even if you could get out of the lease legally, you've got to consider how bad you really want to do that. If for no other reason once you...

    Graham School for Cattlemen

I went quite a few years ago. It was a good experience. They don't just teach you to breed cows, you also get preg checking, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, etc. It's a busy week to get it all in, but I'd do it again tomorrow.

Cull her or keep her (pic)

I guess it would depend on why you are culling (lack of grass, raising cash, etc.) but I don't think she looks too bad. The third calf may be a little light, but she has weaned three out of three for you.

Cattle sale language - take two

See if this helps. It's several years old, so the prices are off, but it describes each grade of cow. http://agnews.tamu.edu/drought/drghtpak98/drght11.html

Milkmaid, that's one of the best posts I've seen on here for a long time. Thanks for saying it.

    Hauling with Uhaul

What about the charge U-haul puts on his credit card for cleaning up the odd odor in the trailer? Better yet, go ahead and rent the trailer, put him in it and drive a couple hundred miles. 3 or 4 hours in a 5X8 box that is totally dark with no air circulation and rides like a pogo stick might...

Variables for picking potential replacement heifers?

I agree. If you have to look too close to make sure they are females, they should likely be in the feedlot, not the replacement pasture.

    Beef vs. Grain Fed Beef????

And not a new one either. I remember years ago grocers featuring "corn fed" beef in their flyers and posters in the store. I always wondered how they knew for sure what those steaks had been eating.

    water is freezing

It's hard to say. It depends on the weather, how exposed the tank is and how high you turn the thermostat up. Especially if the top of the tank is all open, that heat rising thing will hurt you on gas. Covering part of the surface with plywood and styrofoam or something makes a big difference I...

    water is freezing

Have used Ideal or Trojan heaters since forever. Not really much other choice since the last of my Cowboy heaters gave out. Tried a couple of homemade ones, but never found a design I liked. They work well, only drawback other than LP is high now is in a bad snow storm if they are out in the...

    What is a Cattle Trader?

Like everything else you have to be careful. Order buyers- Some are fine, some will skin you alive and smile while they are doing it. If you find one you like to work with and he is honest with you, it can work out well for everybody. I've known some really fine people who were order buyers...

what exactly is the cooperative extension?

I believe about every state has cooperative extension. After congress created the land grant universities, they created research farms and later cooperative extension as a way to provide federal funds for farm related research and public education for rural people. You're right. It is a great...

    Farm Stress

When I was in my twenties, I agonized over everything, and worried all the time. All it got me was raging ulcers and lost sleep. I wasted a lot of years being miserable. Please don't do that. If you can't lick it yourself, theres lots of folks out there who can help you learn how to deal with...

    Auctions: Agree or Disagree?

Stephen there is no education in life that comes free. There is always tuition to pay. School of Hard Knocks is no different. Go back and read Frankies post again. Like anything else in life if you go unprepared to an auction chances are you are going to pay more tuition.
