I usually band shortly after birth with the Tri-bander. I don't give tetanus shot then either and have had no problems.

    Erosion Control

I put down the cloth like they use on construction sites and then crusher-run gravel on my water ramps to the creek. It has worked well. This is what the soil and water people reconmended.

This bull is starting to get on my nerves

The comment about borrowing a bull. I have borrowed one from a friend 2 or 3 times. He has a different breeding season from me so it works out good for both of us. He has a larger herd than I do also. He tells me which bull he thinks is good and I usually go with it. I have a some nice calves in...

    Manual vs. automatic head gate

I would take the $100 head gate if I was closer and you did not want it. I have to work cows (small herd) alone alot of times. I have a manual head gate and it works ok 90% of the time. Every now and then I wished I had an automatic with a truoblesome cow.

Got to be some kind of record

I had a cow who gave me 9 calves out of the 10 years I had her. I hated to sell her but at the time needed the $$ and she was the oldest cow I had. Would love to have several more like her now.

I place my wire on the bump side with this side towards the cows. The bumps help hold the wire at the right spacing.

    Best type of eartags

I use the Z-tags. Easy to put in and if I write on them the ink seems to hold up well. Have not lost one yet.

safety of picking up new calves

I try to check/ ear tag my calves as soon as I find them. I know my momma cows pretty good, as is to who might give me trouble etc. This year I had some first time momma cows and they all did well. I can even get close to and check my neighbors calves (we share a pasture) when he cannot. I feel...

What age do they stop growing?

I agree with hillsdown in that you need not get upset about the answers you got. I am not truely a beginner either but I respect the advice of what most people on this board have to say about a subject. You did ask: At what age do they stop growing? But in your narrative you went in to breeding...

    beating the sale barn

I just bought 4 nice Hereford heifers from the sale barn just last week. Up here everyone likes black cows so I got these cheap. I guess you could call these culls. They will work good for me. I have had good luck with sale barn cows. I hope my luck doesn't change.
