All This Talk - Ever Give One Away?

Being a "hobby rancher" I only have 4 cows. Needless to say I dont try to make money off of them. I have them because my wife and I enjoy being around them. I recently gave one calf to a friend of the family who is going through a nasty divorce to give to her daughter so she would have...

One to make the beginners Happy

    Something doesnt seem right. There is no way that hog could penetrate his skin. It's too tough. She probable broke her tooth trying to bit him and Caustic accidently shot himself culling that hog. :dunce: I have to question Caustic being a real cattleman now...

    Still a beginner?

Just when I thought that I was moving up I slipped and busted my chin on a rung. I'm gonna need stitches. Wait a minute, real cattlemen dont get no dang stitches. I must be a cull now. The only thing left to do is put a bullet in me. What am I thinking? I'm not a real cattleman. I can get...

    Still a beginner?

Come on Mike, Demoted already? I cut it because it was dragging the ground and could have got caught on something and tore the inside of the cow before it was ready. I read a topic here where most agreed that you shouldnt pull it out, that you should let it hang and the weight would do the...

    Still a beginner?

Novice 4th class huh? I'll take it. I was hoping that maybe I was moving up the ladder step by step, but it seems that ladder never stops. Yesterday, I also had to cut the placenta away that was dragging the ground. Would have never known what to do if not for this site and all the helpful...

    Still a beginner?

I will always be a "hobby boy", but I was wondering if I have graduated from a "beginner" to a "novice" yet? My resume includes building corall and chute, put new fence up, buying a stock trailer, buying 4 heifers and making arrangements to have them bred to low BW bull, had them palpated...

    Washouts

Caustic, for someone with a wealth of cattle knowledge, you sure lack common sence. Why in the world would low prices at the salebarn affect weather or not a "hobby boy" keps his cows? With me being nicknamed coach4cows, I , like every other "hobby boy", have an income to support my hobby. And...

    shots

That poor calf got a raw deal getting navel ill and having to be my guinne pig. Those sub Q shots were difficult. That skin is tight. I guess I did it wrong because I tried to tent the skin. Finally got smart about it did it like Bez said in his post. For the 5 shots so far, she has...

txag, couldnt get the link to come up. I'll try to go directly and see if it works. Texan, I see ignorance as a lack of knowledge and when it comes to cattle, I'm ignorant...lol. Thanks for the link. It tell you everything you need to know.

    shots

Thanks for the response everyone. I havent had to purchase any bottles, so I wasnt sure if there are detailed directions or not on them. I'm gonna make a list of the basic meds and supplies that I might need and start stocking up.

    shots

I've read a lot about what shots to give for different situations, but cant find any information on how to administer them. Are there different methods for vitamins, penicillan, antibiotics? What I mean is how do you know if its supposed to go into the muscle, vein, under the skin, or in the...

    Bull's feet

thanks for taking it easy on me. Like I said, I dont know squat about cattle. I only know about history and athletes and I dont know which ones you've been looking at, but I can tell you that most of the top athletes walk slightly pigeon toed. If someone walks with their feet pointed slightly...

    Cattle naming?

I bought my cows in pairs so I named the 1st pair Thelma and Louise. The wife named the second pair Laverne and Shirley.

    Bull's feet

Let me humor you for a minute. This is only a guess and I'm answering based on my knowledge of (human)athletes. I dont know much about bulls, but I think of bulls as being athletic and I can tell you that most good athletes are slightly pigeon toed(feet turned in). I have never seen an...

    another EPD question

Im understanding EPDs more and more, but I dont know how they are derived. How does a person obtain EPD's on an animal? Are EPDs only for purebreds? For instance, If I buy a bull or cow and it is not for certain if it is purebred or crossbred, is there a way to find out?

    keep or sale heifers

I'm no expert by any streatch. How about selling the bull and buying more cows? I didnt think that it was worth keeping and feeding a bull unless you had 15 or so cows. Buy a bull later when you have more cows.
