    C section survival rate?

I've never had one die. Usually have 1 a year, could be an old cow, a heifer with too small pelvis, etc, but every one survived and many raised that calf as well. But ours have all been done at the Vet's clinic and were well restrained.

    lb/day - on the cow

I keep track of ADG as well. But if you don't keep track of BW then you can use WPD (Weight Per Day of age). We cull pretty hard here, not just conformation issues (udders, feet etc), but also temperament and performance. Culling goes on Temperament, then Performance and then (unless they are...

    Food for Thought, Vaccines

But, really, I don't want this to turn into a horse/horse people discussion. Just wondering, if humans and horses can be vaccinated early in their life (and have long lasting immunity) is this also true of cattle. Do we really need to be vaccinating the COW herd annually once they have had their...

    Food for Thought, Vaccines

Here is an interesting article about vaccinations in horses. I'm interested in what others think, if this is a possibility with cattle. Now, I believe in vaccinations, and we vaccinate our cattle. But this made me wonder if it is possible that we are over-vaccinating as well. Or, perhaps this...

    Calf Question

It wouldn't be the first time only one animal has a problem. Maybe he's more susceptible than the rest, maybe he's the only one that got into the bad feed. Its definitely not impossible, seen it happen many times, with various diseases and other issues.

    Perforated Ulcers

We seem to deal with a handful of these every year. I'd like to know if anyone has some suggestions for preventing them. We lost 4 calves last year. I am considering giving all the newborns a shot of a 7-8 way clostridial. Any thoughts on that?

I did, haven't got it on the computer yet, but I will send it to you.

    Some Sort of Infection....

Actually, I don't believe in vaccinating right off the truck, they're too stressed at that point, IMO, that the vaccine often doesn't do much. I'd have quarantined if we could have, but we don't really have an extra pen (where they wouldnt have been right across from the rest anyhow)

    Some Sort of Infection....

Umm no its between 100-102, or generally considered about 101. And I wouldn't have worried too much about it being in the 102.5 to 103 if it had been the middle of summer and hot out, rater than below freezing... We considered that, as well as the amount of exercise the calves were doing...

    Some Sort of Infection....

Here's a weird one for you all. We have approx 50 head of weaned heifer calves. Most born here, but we did buy 16 head. Our own calves were weaned Oct 24, the ones we bought came in on Nov 4,7 and 14. Our own calves were pre-vaccinated about Oct 1 and 10 of the 16 we bought were as well. Not...

    Dipthieria

We usually treat one or two every year for diphtheria. Some we save, and some don't make the summer. Diphtheria is the same bug that causes footrot, from what I have learned. From the treatment protocols we have been given in the past you can use basically any antibiotic that is effective for...

They sure don't look very swollen to me. I would hesitate to call it joint ill.

    Ear Tags

We use Ytex tags as well. I only use blank tags. On the cow tags, I use the bottled ink http://www.eartagcentral.com/product.ph ... stseller=Y I have tags that are 10+ years old that are still visible to read using that stuff. It does take a while to dry though. On the calf tags I just use a...

    Data collection, Excel, etc

Sounds interesting Nesi. I keep about the same records as you, don't have your scoring formula of course though. I do have a page for each cow as well. I'd love to see templates of your charts and spreadsheets. As well I'm using Biotrack at the moment which gives me a lot of data, it's a...
