    Mama cow can't get up

Calved June 16, this year. Not really droopy, just not herself since yesterday. Before yesterday she was ok. Doesn't want to move around much. She's usually first at the feed trough. Still has an appetite though. I did a google and it looks like maybe low blood calcium(milk fever)even though...

    Mama cow can't get up

Yesterday morning, checking on the herd, I found one of my most productive cows couldn't get up. She obviously was too weak in her hind legs. After coaxing her awhile she finally struggled to all four even though I could see she was having a hard time of it and had a small bit of trembling in...

    Bovine Health Question

I live in Texas and we have what is called trade days all over the state. These are usually held once a month in small towns. Is it safe health-wise for me to take these calves to a market like trade days? Has anybody had any health problems with their calves after taking them to a trade days...

    Cow ate hay netting

Today she's eating hay and behaving normally but I'm still concerned because she still has the knot on the side of her face, just below the left eye. I'm thinking that it's a wad of twine that's caught between her cheek and her teeth. I've never stuck my fingers into a cows mouth because I don't...

    Cow ate hay netting

Just discovered a cow with netting slightly protruding out of her mouth. She wouldn't let me approach her to grab it so I got her into the squeeze chute and it had disappeared. Then I noticed a large lump on her left cheek under her eye which I hadn't seen before. Could the twine be lodged a...

    Worst month ever!

I really feel for you. Anyone who has raised animals know how much time, effort, and money one spends in that pursuit. Is it worth it?

    Spraying 10% permethrin on cattle

First, diesel is not environmentally friendly to your farm or ranch. Secondly, it's not approved for use, per label. Thirdly, "years and years" ago today's recommended oils didn't exist. But...use what you want. I trust the experts. :tiphat:

    Spraying 10% permethrin on cattle

I would NOT use diesel in the permethrin mix. Use mineral oil, organic oil, or even vegetable oil. For label instructions see https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_se ... 130129.pdf

    winter "accommodations"

With all the talk about Winter care of our cattle, it seems to me that if we consider our investment in them is significant, that we should treat them as "pets." Most of us would never leave our dog or cat out in weather that we know is beyond their capability of sustaining a healthy existence...

    Produce scraps for cattle?

My local supermarket discards lots of trimmings from their produce department. Have yall ever heard of anybody feeding these to cattle? Seems to me they would thrive on this stuff but not sure. Please advise. Thanks! :tiphat:

    Use of Vitamin A

I've read where it's good to give pregnant cows/heifers a shot of Vitamin A several weeks before calving for the calve's sake. Can it be used at other times for other uses? It only comes in 250 ml vials and I'm concerned about the shelf life. Thanks!

    Cougar attack, pictures

Could be a young bobat. They tend to play with their prey just for practice. If it was a puma he'd gone for the throat/neck area and drug it away for dinner.

    Post-trocar treatment

Thanks! Maybe it is a better idea not to suture the wound so it can leak the bad stuff as it's healing. Hadn't thought of that.
